"Based on the successful election of the current President of Poland, Karol Nawrocki, whom I am proud to support, and our relationship with him, I am pleased to announce that the United States will send an additional 5,000 troops to Poland," Trump wrote on the social media platform Truth Social on May 21.

According to RT, Trump announced the decision after the Pentagon abruptly canceled plans to rotate 4,000 US troops to Poland last week, causing confusion among Warsaw officials. US Vice President JD Vance later described the suspension as a delay, not a troop reduction, and said the media had "overreacted."
The move comes after the Trump administration announced the withdrawal of 5,000 US troops from Germany amid escalating tensions between Washington and Berlin over the conflict between the US and Israel with Iran.
The White House and the Pentagon have yet to clarify whether the “additional forces” sent to Poland that Trump announced are the same brigade whose rotations have been halted, or whether they are forces about to be withdrawn from Germany.
The U.S. president has repeatedly accused European NATO member states of not contributing enough to their defense, viewing the deployment of U.S. troops in these countries as a political reward or punishment. There are now reports that the White House has compiled a list of “good” and “bad” NATO member states based on their support for Washington’s policies, including the military campaign against Iran.
The U.S. currently maintains approximately 80,000 troops stationed across Europe, including more than 38,000 in Germany. U.S. War Secretary Pete Hegseth once stated that Poland, where around 10,000 U.S. troops are stationed, is one of Washington's closest military partners in Europe and a "model ally."
Russia has repeatedly condemned the increasing militarization of Europe, accusing Western governments of using the "threat" from Moscow as a pretext to justify turning the European Union (EU) into a military bloc and to distract from internal problems.
