According to Reuters, on April 1, OpenAI - the company behind ChatGPT - successfully raised $40 billion in a funding round led by SoftBank, bringing the company's valuation to $300 billion.
CNBC said this is the largest funding round in history for a private technology company, putting this start-up in the group of the most valuable private companies in the world , on par with SpaceX, ByteDance and Stripe.
The company will receive an initial $10 billion, with SoftBank Group investing $7.5 billion and a group of investors contributing $2.5 billion. The remaining $30 billion will be disbursed by the end of 2025 if OpenAI officially converts to a for-profit company.
If the transition fails, SoftBank's investment will drop to $20 billion, meaning OpenAI will lose a quarter of the deal.
The announcement of this funding round emphasizes OpenAI's goal of building "artificial general intelligence" (AGI) for the benefit of all humanity.
CEO Sam Altman admits that to achieve this goal, OpenAI needs computing resources, energy, global infrastructure and a huge amount of capital.
The $40 billion investment will help OpenAI expand AI research, upgrade its computing infrastructure, and improve existing tools.
The funding round comes just months after OpenAI announced Stargate, a $500 billion venture to build large-scale AI data centers over the next four years in partnership with SoftBank, Oracle, and Abu Dhabi's MGX fund.
OpenAI has been on a roll lately. In just one hour on March 31, the company attracted 1 million users thanks to its ChatGPT Images feature, which allows users to create Studio Ghibli-style artwork.
CEO Sam Altman announced that in the coming months, OpenAI will release a powerful open-source language model with superior inference capabilities. ChatGPT currently serves 500 million users per week.
Despite its explosive growth, OpenAI is still burning through a lot of cash. According to Bloomberg, the company is expected to generate $12.7 billion in revenue in 2025, up from $3.7 billion last year. However, OpenAI doesn’t expect to be profitable until 2029, when it forecasts revenue could reach $125 billion.
