In a country where bitter football rivalries often span generations, Botafogo and Palmeiras are set to open a new chapter in Brazil's explosive football rivalry when they meet for the first time in the last 16 of the FIFA Club World Cup.
The feud between the two exploded in 2023, a year that saw dramatic developments both on and off the pitch. Palmeiras, led by young talent Endrick, overturned a three-goal deficit to beat Botafogo 4-3. This result saw Botafogo collapse in the race for the Brazilian championship.
Palmeiras later won the league title. This caused tension that led to violent arguments between officials of the two teams.
Palmeiras president Leila Pereira called Botafogo owner John Textor "an idiot" and suggested he should be "banned from Brazilian football". Botafogo accused referees of favouring Palmeiras.
Botafogo then got their revenge in the 2024 Copa Libertadores, eliminating Palmeiras in the round of 16. When the two teams met again in the Brazilian league at Palmeiras' home ground, Botafogo won again, eventually completing the domestic and international double.
Botafogo are unbeaten against Palmeiras in five straight games since the 2023 defeat, with the upcoming clash being described by local commentators as a “collective release” for both fans and players.
Botafogo defender Alex Telles said: "The last few games between Botafogo and Palmeiras have been very intense and fierce. This is healthy competition for Brazilian football. It's great to see two Brazilian teams facing each other at the FIFA Club World Cup."
