On December 21, the Times of Israel newspaper quoted an announcement from the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) saying that they had destroyed a network of Hamas tunnels under Palestine Square in Gaza City.
The tunnel network connects to the homes, offices and hideouts of senior Hamas leaders, including military wing chief Muhammad Deif and Yahya Sinwar, Hamas' top official in Gaza.
The tunnel system includes living quarters, food and water storage, indicating Hamas' plan to hide in these locations for a long time.
According to the IDF, this extensive tunnel network was used by senior Hamas leaders when they launched an attack on southern Israel on October 7.
On the same day, Al Jazeera TV channel quoted Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu declaring that fighting in Gaza would not stop until "Hamas is eliminated".
“The choice I give Hamas is simple: surrender or die. They have no and will have no other choice,” Netanyahu said.
However, the Ezzedine al-Qassam Brigades - the military wing of the Islamist Hamas movement - said Israel's goal was "definitely doomed to failure", stressing that the return of more hostages in Gaza depended on a "cessation of hostilities".
Meanwhile, during a meeting with French President Emmanuel Macron on December 21, King Abdullah of Jordan warned that Israel's continued conflict in Gaza would have "catastrophic consequences" for the region.
The world needs to pressure Israel to end its military campaign in Gaza and remove obstacles to vital aid for some 2 million Palestinians in the enclave, where hunger and disease are spreading rapidly, King Abdullah said.
