The African delegation proposed a peace plan focusing on 10 key points, including: listening to the views of all nations; initiating diplomatic negotiations as soon as possible; beginning de-escalation of conflict from both sides; guaranteeing national sovereignty and independence in accordance with the UN Charter; ensuring security for all nations; guaranteeing the transport of grain and fertilizers between the two countries; providing humanitarian assistance to those who have become victims of war; resolving the issue of prisoner exchanges and the return of children; post-war reconstruction and support for war victims; and closer cooperation with African countries.
For his part, Russian President Vladimir Putin affirmed that Moscow is ready for constructive dialogue with all those who desire peace on the principles of justice, taking into account the legitimate interests of all parties, and will consider any proposals from African countries regarding the resolution of the issue in Ukraine.
The Russian president also praised the balanced approach of the African Union leader to the situation in Ukraine.
Commenting on the African delegation's peace plan following the talks, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov affirmed Moscow's support for a principled approach that there can be no double standards in the world ; that the principles of the UN Charter are respected and implemented; that there are no unilateral sanctions; that there are no attempts to ensure the security of one country at the expense of the security of others; and that security is indivisible on a global scale.
Meanwhile, Russian President's press secretary Dmitry Peskov said that the Russian president and representatives of African countries would have further contact, although not all terms in the peace initiative on Ukraine align with Moscow's position.
A high-level African diplomatic delegation arrived in Kyiv on June 16th hoping to bring to the negotiating table the voice of a continent that has suffered greatly from the Ukraine conflict, including rising grain prices.
Subsequently, the delegation traveled from Ukraine to Russia on June 17th, including South African President Cyril Ramaphosa, Senegalese President Macky Sall, Zambian President Hakainde Hichilema, and Comoros President Azali Assoumani – who is also currently the head of the African Union.
In addition, Uganda, Egypt, and Congo-Brazzaville sent high-ranking officials to participate in this trip.
