Crystal Palace are out of the Europa League. |
The decision comes as Lyon, in which billionaire John Textor once held a stake, also secured Europa League football after winning their relegation appeal and retaining their place in Ligue 1.
Palace, FA Cup winners after their win over Manchester City, were guaranteed a place in the Europa League. However, as Textor had previously owned shares in both Palace and Lyon, UEFA ruled that the two clubs could not compete in the same competition, under Article 5.01 of the multiple ownership regulations.
Although Textor sold 43% of Palace shares to New York Jets owner Woody Johnson, the deal was completed after the March 1 deadline, so UEFA still considered it a conflict of interest.
Palace insist Textor does not have full control of the club, UEFA has still decided to demote them to the Conference League, while the Europa League place is expected to go to the next highest-ranked Premier League side, Nottingham Forest. However, Sky Sports News says that place is yet to be confirmed pending the outcome of the Selhurst side's appeal to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS).
The Blue Eagles were furious with the decision and insisted they deserved to win the title, which is likely to be unprecedented in European competition.
