We spoke with PhD Vo Thi Oanh – Head of Business at Swinburne Vietnam, Da Nang – to better understand the appeal of this major to students and employers.
Business Analysis – The “translator” between data and strategy
Data is considered the “new oil” of the world . Businesses not only collect but also understand and use data to make decisions. Ms. Oanh shared: “Data sources are only valuable when they are analyzed correctly and converted into strategic information to serve the business.” That is the important role of Business Analysts – the person who connects data with strategy to create practical value.

This major combines business knowledge, technology and data science . The practitioner does not just “sit in front of the screen looking at numbers” but is a bridge between departments and answers the questions: What do customers need? How is the market changing? How to optimize costs and increase efficiency? Unlike accounting or finance, which focus on analyzing past data, Business Analytics is future-oriented, answering “What will happen?” and “What should we do next?”, Ms. Oanh explained.
Who is this major suitable for?
The Business Analytics major is open to many young people, and does not require high math or programming skills. “What matters is logical thinking, a love of working with data, and curiosity about the ‘why’ behind business phenomena,” Ms. Oanh emphasized. Successful people are those who know how to connect data with people, translate data into understandable language, and create real-world impact.
Human resource demand "skyrockets" in the next 5 years
In Vietnam, the banking, retail, logistics, healthcare, education sectors... are all experiencing a boom in demand for business analysis personnel. However, the supply is still limited, especially young, well-trained human resources.
The development of artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning is further boosting the demand for these skills. “In the next 5 years, every business will need data analysts to compete,” Ms. Oanh predicted. This is a golden time to invest in business analysis skills.

Message for young people at a crossroads
Many hot majors are constantly changing, confusing students. Ms. Oanh advised: “Don’t follow trends, choose a major that helps you create real value for society and businesses. Business analytics is not just about analyzing data, but about making businesses smarter and more agile through data. A career is not just about what you do, but about the impact you create. Learn to lead, not just follow.”
