The role of the teacher has always been highly valued.
Vietnamese Confucian society highly valued the role of the teacher. Teachers were considered sacred symbols of learning, the benchmark of morality and character. Of the three particularly important positions in ancient society—Ruler, Teacher, and Father—the teacher ranked second only to the king and was especially respected by society and the people. Teacher Chu Văn An is revered as "the exemplary teacher for all generations," a prime example of integrity and the courage to stand up for justice. Historical studies of education affirm that the life and moral example of Teacher Chu Văn An laid the foundation for the tradition of respecting teachers during the medieval period.
President Ho Chi Minh – Teacher Nguyen Tat Thanh, was not only a brilliant leader of the Vietnamese nation but also a great teacher and an exemplary personality. His groundbreaking ideas illuminated the path of national education. He always placed teachers in the most respected and noble position in society. He emphasized: "What could be more glorious than the profession of training future generations who actively contribute to building socialism and communism? A good teacher – a teacher worthy of being called a teacher – is the most glorious person, even if their name is not published in newspapers, or they do not receive medals, but good teachers are unsung heroes. This is something very glorious…".
The example of teacher Nguyen Ngoc Ky – a teacher who wrote with his feet, overcame his circumstances to study and become an outstanding teacher, a living symbol of the power of education – is clear evidence of the spirit of learning and gratitude towards those who impart knowledge. He is a prime example of the strength to overcome adversity.
Spreading the tradition of respecting teachers and valuing education.
After the reunification of the country on April 30, 1975, the education sector entered a new historical phase with many challenges and complexities. Following President Ho Chi Minh's advice: "Today, if our brotherly nations want to progress and develop their cultures, we must eliminate prejudices between ethnic groups, unite, love, and help each other like brothers and sisters in one family," teachers from both North and South Vietnam stood together on the podium to eradicate illiteracy, rebuild the school system, and impart new knowledge, training future generations during the national reconstruction period. The tradition of respecting teachers and the principle of remembering one's roots continued to be preserved by generations of students and society as a whole. Through their dedication and silent sacrifice, teachers made significant contributions to the building, protection, and development of the country, nurturing the aspirations of millions of Vietnamese students. The tradition of respecting and honoring teachers continues to be strengthened and spread through policies that celebrate the teaching profession, such as the titles of People's Teacher and Excellent Teacher.
After 40 years of national reform, the tradition of "respecting teachers and valuing education" continues to be preserved and promoted. Education is entering a period of digital transformation, with teachers proactively innovating teaching methods, applying modern technology, and developing digital learning materials. Particularly during the COVID-19 pandemic, millions of Vietnamese teachers have strived to adapt to online teaching, updating and innovating in their instruction, demonstrating exceptional dedication and responsibility.
Affirming the role of teachers in the new era
In the context of implementing Resolution No. 71 of the Politburo on breakthroughs in education and training development, the tradition of "respecting teachers and valuing morality" needs to be elevated to a new level, while preserving its core values and adapting to modern conditions. The Khanh Hoa Provincial Party Committee has issued Resolution No. 01 on the Strategy for Sustainable Development of Education and Training in Khanh Hoa Province until 2035, with a vision to 2045. In this resolution, the province continues to maintain the achievements in education and training, laying the foundation for breakthroughs in education and training development; contributing to the successful implementation of Resolution No. 09 of the Politburo on building and developing Khanh Hoa Province until 2030, with a vision to 2045.
Resolution No. 01 clearly states: “Building a teaching staff that is sufficient in quantity, ensures quality, and is rational in structure, meeting the requirements of educational reform and training; allocating sufficient teaching and staff positions according to prescribed standards; improving the quality of training and professional development for teachers and educational administrators; promoting preferential policies to attract talented students to study pedagogy; building staff housing and creating favorable conditions for teachers from distant areas to work.” Affirming the central position of the teacher is the foundation for building a high-quality education system. Therefore, teachers must always cultivate revolutionary ethics, constantly improve their professional skills, and especially, be a shining example for students to follow; teachers must be exemplary in both words and deeds, must love and care for students as if they were their own children, must truly love their profession and school, and must constantly learn to improve.
In the digital age, upholding academic integrity means maintaining academic honesty, combating fraud, preventing the commercialization of education, and building a culture of genuine learning and genuine testing. Resolution No. 71 calls for the comprehensive development of education, placing ethics and civic competence at the center. Resolution No. 01 specifically states: Emphasis should be placed on educating students and pupils in ethics, character, and the standard values of Vietnamese people in all aspects of political, economic, and social life; clearly defining the roles, responsibilities, and coordination mechanisms between families, schools, and society in educating students and pupils in ethics, character, and the standard values of Vietnamese people; highlighting the responsibility of state management agencies, Party committees, and local governments; and focusing on cultivating professional ethics for the teaching staff… This helps protect the “foundation” of education: teachers should be teachers, students should be students; teaching both knowledge and character. Study to improve oneself, live responsibly towards society, contribute to preserving the fine traditions of the nation's history, and contribute to the development of society, homeland, and country.
School culture must be extended to the online space, with principles of respectful, cooperative, and transparent conduct. A modern educational environment that is "safe, friendly, and positive" is a key requirement. Resolution No. 01 outlines the tasks and solutions for persistently building a school culture, a culture of quality, practical learning, and practical skills, linked to the exemplary role of teachers; promoting the application of science, technology, and artificial intelligence in innovating teaching methods, testing, and evaluation; and fostering the application of digital education models, AI education, smart education management, digital schools, and smart classrooms… This culture is the foundation for the tradition of "respecting teachers and valuing education" to deeply permeate social life, all state management agencies, local Party committees and governments, and especially the lives of the younger generation.
Preserving and promoting the fine traditions of the nation.
In the era of Industry 4.0, teachers must become guides of knowledge, organizers of learning activities, and promoters of creative thinking. Resolution No. 71 of the Politburo outlines the development of digital and technological capabilities and professional autonomy for teachers, helping them to play a central role in educational reform. Resolution No. 01 of the Provincial Party Committee proposes several solutions: Raising the standards of digital and artificial intelligence skills for learners and teachers at all levels, integrating them into educational programs linked to promoting creative and experiential activities; implementing policies to encourage and mobilize businesses and higher education institutions to participate in training teachers and learners in digital and artificial intelligence skills. In addition, it emphasizes raising English proficiency standards for teachers at all levels; ensuring sufficient numbers and qualifications of teachers, adequate facilities and technology, and strongly applying artificial intelligence in English teaching and learning…
The image of the teacher continues to be emphasized and affirmed: as a guide to knowledge, an organizer of learning activities, and a promoter of creative thinking. The tradition of "respecting teachers and valuing education" continues to be inherited and promoted through direct forms, combined with research, and transformed through online appreciation activities, digital art, media programs, and education festivals… This aligns with the policy of mobilizing the entire society to participate in educational development, spreading the spirit of learning in new ways suitable for the current era of developing digital technology.
It can be said that "respecting teachers and valuing morality" is not only a historical legacy but also a crucial cultural resource for the development of Vietnamese education in the new era. When linked to strategic directions from Resolution No. 71, Resolution No. 01, etc., this tradition becomes a powerful driving force for innovation and breakthroughs in education and training development; improving the quality of human resources and consolidating national cultural identity. Preserving and promoting the cultural tradition of "respecting teachers and valuing morality" is not only the responsibility of the education sector but also the mission of each province, city, locality, the entire society, and every Vietnamese person at home and abroad, aiming to contribute to building a humane, modern, and creative education system – the foundation for the sustainable development of Vietnam in the new era.
