Necessity is the mother of invention...

Mr. Vo Van Khoa (residing in Hoa Son commune, Hoa Vang district) has been involved with rice and lotus cultivation since childhood, but the area where he lives is often flooded, resulting in poor economic returns from his rice fields.

After much thought, recognizing the advantage of his large plot of land, he decided not to grow rice or lotus anymore, but to dig ponds to raise fish. He put his idea into action, investing hundreds of millions of dong to raise basa fish, tilapia, and hybrid catfish.

When he first started in aquaculture, he lacked experience, so his first batch of fish grew slowly and then died in large numbers, leading to losses.

Undeterred, he traveled to large farms to learn about freshwater fish farming, and sought information from books and newspapers to understand the habits of the fish species he intended to raise.

After some learning, he decided to renovate the fish pond, clean the water environment and pond banks, and release a second batch of fish. This batch, thanks to proper care, yielded a high productivity.

Mr. Khoa currently has 4 fish ponds covering an area of 2 hectares (Photo: Hoai Son).

However, he faced further difficulties due to unstable demand, low market prices, and low revenue. At this point, he considered opening a recreational fishing service, creating a playground for anglers and providing an additional market for his fish.

He expanded the ponds across an area of 2 hectares, raising more carp, tilapia, and red snapper. He also planted many coconut trees along the pathways around the ponds to create a vibrant landscape and unique photo spots to attract tourists.

In addition, Mr. Khoa also arranged stone benches and built thatched huts to provide resting places for visitors. He also constructed a restaurant and kitchen area to prepare and serve traditional country-style cuisine to meet the needs of tourists.

Mr. Khoa also revealed that he regularly adds more fish to the pond every two weeks because he's afraid anglers will go empty-handed. Therefore, he's always a regular customer of many anglers in and outside of Da Nang .

Profits of hundreds of millions of dong.

According to Mr. Khoa, to keep the fish healthy and the surroundings clean and beautiful, he always cleans the pond and changes the water regularly to provide oxygen for the fish and prevent unpleasant odors.

The fish's food source consists of cooked scraps to avoid polluting the water and to encourage faster feeding. He also supplements their diet with flour to promote faster growth and better health.

Recreational fishing services attract tourists seeking unique experiences (Photo: Hoai Son).

According to Mr. Khoa, raising fish caught by hook is much more laborious than raising fish for meat, but it yields higher economic value. If raising fish for commercial purposes, they can be sold after about 6 months, while the ponds used for raising fish caught by hook will continue to be used to serve tourists who want to fish.

The fishing service costs 50,000 VND per person (without taking the fish) or 250,000 VND per person (with taking the fish). Tourists can buy the fish they catch according to their needs at prices ranging from 25,000 to 65,000 VND per kilogram, depending on the type.

On average, the fish farming model combined with recreational fishing services brings Mr. Khoa's family hundreds of millions of dong in profit each year. In addition, he provides employment for about 7 workers with stable salaries.

Besides raising fish, he boldly expanded his integrated farming model of garden, pond, and livestock. Above the pond, he planted various fruit trees to attract tourists.

Recently, he also learned to raise calcium worms to feed his chickens. Mr. Khoa said that these are the larvae of the black soldier fly. The method of raising them is quite simple, using styrofoam boxes, buckets, or plastic containers as shelters for the worms. The worms' food consists of vegetable waste.

Besides fish and calcium-rich worms, taking advantage of the abundant grass in the surrounding fields, he also invested in raising a herd of 19 cows, worth hundreds of millions of dong. Thanks to the application of systematic care techniques, the herd of cows is thriving.
