Earning hundreds of millions in profit each year.
Driven by his passion for raising fish in his garden ponds, Mr. Bon boldly ventured into a new direction with a specialty fish species, yielding outstanding results. Six years ago, stemming from his habit of raising fish for family meals, Mr. Bon tried raising snakehead fish, a species highly valued by the market for its meat quality and stable economic value.
Recognizing the great potential, he decided to invest in buying land and building eight above-ground fish ponds, each 30-40 cm deep, for convenient care and water quality control. "Every day I change the water to keep the environment clean, so the fish grow quickly and are less prone to disease. The fish are raised in successive cycles, so there's always fish to sell," Mr. Bon said.
These above-ground tanks allow him to directly observe the growth process, reduce the amount of care needed, and make harvesting much easier compared to traditional pond farming.
Currently, Mr. Bon's family raises both commercial fish and fish fry. On average, he supplies the market with about 5 million fish fry and 20 tons of commercial fish each year. Even at the lowest price, commercial fish reaches 75,000 VND/kg, and at the highest, it reaches 110,000 VND/kg.
Each fish pond generates a profit of approximately 120 million VND per year, becoming a stable source of income for the family. Besides selling fish locally, the family's fish fry are also supplied by traders to many mountainous provinces in Northern and Central Vietnam.
What's remarkable is that Mr. Bon has actively shared his fish farming experience on social media platforms like Facebook, TikTok, and YouTube. His videos on fish care techniques, water management, disease prevention, etc., have attracted a lot of attention. Numerous comments and exchanges of knowledge have helped him access new techniques and improve his fish care process.
Mass breeding should be avoided.

Mr. Bon took advantage of the local garlic supply, grinding it into a paste and mixing it with fish feed to prevent disease and boost immunity. "Using garlic is safe, inexpensive, and suits the readily available resources in my hometown," he shared.
This simple method yields remarkable results, significantly reducing fish diseases, saving on medication costs, and minimizing water pollution.
The model of raising snakehead fish implemented by Mr. Bon's family is attracting more and more households to visit and learn from it. Mr. Nguyen Duc Tin, from the same neighborhood, said: "Seeing how effective Mr. Bon's model is, I'm also preparing to build a similar pond. With a cost of about 15 million VND per pond, and an area of 40 m², I can start doing it."
Many families in the area also utilize old house foundations, enclosing them with tarpaulins for simple yet effective fish farming. Therefore, the snakehead fish farming model is becoming a new economic development direction, suitable for the limited land and moderate investment capital of many households.
Currently, Mr. Bon imports the spotted snakehead fish from China. He is constantly concerned about transportation and quality control of the incoming stock. He also supplies the fish to many other places. "Despite its high economic value, the industry still heavily relies on imported fish. If we could be self-sufficient domestically, people would feel much more secure in their livelihoods," Mr. Bon said.
Mr. Bon's model of raising spotted snakehead fish has been a shining example in the ward's economic development movement in recent years. The selection of specialty fish species, systematic investment in infrastructure, and the application of technology and social media to share experiences have made the model not only successful for his family but also created a ripple effect in the community. However, the supply of spotted snakehead fish currently depends entirely on imports. This is a major limitation and poses risks if the market fluctuates or transportation becomes difficult. People who want to follow suit need to conduct thorough research and careful calculations to avoid making impulsive investments.
