Overview of the Quang Ngai - Hoai Nhon Expressway Project

The Quang Ngai - Hoai Nhon expressway project, one of the 12 component projects of the Eastern North-South Expressway, is entering its final stages of completion. The project has a total length of 88km, passing through the two provinces of Quang Ngai and Binh Dinh, with a total investment of 20,470 billion VND. Started in early 2023, after nearly two years of construction, the main components of the route have been largely completed.

The route starts at Nghia Giang commune, connecting to the Da Nang - Quang Ngai expressway, and ends at Bong Son ward, Hoai Nhon town (Binh Dinh province), continuing with the Hoai Nhon - Quy Nhon expressway. In the initial phase, the route will be built with 4 lanes, a 17m wide cross-section, allowing for a design speed of 80-90km/h.

Binh De Tunnel - A key project

According to Deo Ca Group, the biggest technical challenge of the project lies in the complex mountainous area bordering Quang Ngai and Binh Dinh (formerly). To overcome this terrain, contractors have constructed three consecutive tunnels through the mountains along a 10km stretch of the route.

The three tunnel projects include: Duc Pho Tunnel (Tunnel No. 1) 0.6km long, Huan Phong Tunnel (Tunnel No. 2) 0.7km long, and Binh De Tunnel (Tunnel No. 3) 3.2km long. Of these, the Binh De Tunnel, which runs through the mountain range of the same name, is the longest tunnel project on the entire Eastern North-South Expressway to date.

At 3.2km long, the Binh De Tunnel is also the third longest road tunnel in the country, after the Hai Van Tunnel and the Deo Ca Tunnel. The project is equipped with modern technical systems, including 20 jet fans, 1,734 lighting fixtures with power ranging from 40-220W, and safety systems such as fire prevention and control, gas concentration monitoring, and a synchronized power supply system.

Construction progress and final items

Currently, construction units are focusing on completing the final items inside and outside the Binh De tunnel. Engineers have mobilized drilling rigs equipped with lifting arms to apply the primer and finish paint to the interior surfaces of the tunnel.

Simultaneously, other tasks such as cutting expansion joints in the concrete road surface, welding steel railings, and adjusting the jet fan system are also being urgently implemented in preparation for the operational phase. Traffic signs along the entire route have been largely installed. In addition, two rest stops in Dinh Cuong commune (Quang Ngai) and Hoai Nhon (Binh Dinh) are also under construction.

Socio- economic impacts and significance

The completion of the Quang Ngai - Hoai Nhon expressway and other key infrastructure projects is expected to expand economic development space, reduce transportation costs, and improve the national logistics system. According to the Ministry of Construction, by December 19th, the country will have opened 3,188km of expressways for technical traffic, completed approximately 1,700km of coastal roads, and basically completed phase 1 of Long Thanh International Airport to serve technical flights. These projects will create favorable conditions for people and businesses, promoting sustainable socio-economic development.
