On December 14th, the Airports Corporation of Vietnam (ACV) announced that the entire runway lighting system has been activated simultaneously. Key technical items such as beacons, taxiways, and landing approach areas are undergoing final checks, cleaning, and inspections in preparation for the scheduled test flight on December 19th, just five days away.
Bringing runway number 1 into a ready state is not only a technical acceptance step, but also a milestone showing that the Long Thanh airport project is gradually moving from the construction phase to the trial operation and system adjustment phase.
Previously, the runway lighting system was successfully tested during a calibration flight at the end of April 2025. This system uses 100% LED technology, imported from Europe, meeting the stringent standards of the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO). Simultaneously, Long Thanh Airport is equipped with an ILS/DME precision landing guidance system, allowing aircraft to approach and land safely even in adverse weather conditions, enhancing stability and safety in operations.

According to ACV, the synchronized combination of lighting systems and navigation equipment ensures highly accurate take-off and landing, creating an important technical foundation for airport operations in the next phase.
Long Thanh Airport is a key national project, planned with a final capacity of up to 100 million passengers and 5 million tons of cargo per year. Phase 1 of the project has a total investment of over 109,000 billion VND, including a 4,000m long runway, a passenger terminal with a capacity of 25 million passengers/year, and a synchronized technical infrastructure system.

Upon completion, Long Thanh Airport is expected to alleviate pressure on Tan Son Nhat Airport and become an international air transit hub for the southern region, connecting the logistics, tourism, and trade chains of the Southeast key economic zone.
For this key project, the Prime Minister instructed ministries, agencies, and the managing bodies of the component projects to strictly implement directives, urgently review remaining tasks, and develop specific and detailed plans to ensure technical flight operations on December 19th, and to continue completing construction items and conducting trial operations to ensure commercial operation in early 2026.

The fact that runway number 1 is ready for its first test flight in five days is considered a positive sign, indicating that the progress of the core components of the project is on schedule. This is also an important preparatory step for Long Thanh Airport to gradually move closer to its goal of commencing commercial operation as planned.
