This mission is to be ready to provide the labor market with professional semiconductor engineers, meeting the development needs of the high-tech industry in the context of international integration.

Steady steps in training

In the 2024-2025 school year, the University of Technology will open a new major in microelectronics - microchip design under the field of electronics and telecommunications engineering. To meet social expectations, the school is actively preparing the necessary conditions for training the first batch of students in the major of microelectronics - microchip design, as well as other majors related to this field.

Regarding the training program, the school closely follows the practical requirements of the semiconductor industry, based on carefully designed output standards to ensure that students are fully equipped with specialized knowledge and skills. Important courses related to microchip design such as: analog microchip design, digital microchip design, physical design, etc. are included in the program, helping students have a comprehensive foundation in this field of study.

The school has basic and advanced electronics laboratories supported by Fujikin, Renessas, and FPT . At the same time, it has invested in a new IC design lab with 40 high-configuration computers, equipped with industry-standard IC design software. In addition, to help students gain practical experience, the school has opened a basic electronics lab with equipment sponsored by ASIC Keysight Smart Bench Essentials.

To improve the quality of training, the University of Technology constantly trains and improves the capacity of its teaching staff. The school cooperates with the National Innovation Center (NIC) and experts with many years of experience in the field of semiconductor microchips in the US to organize in-depth training courses, improving the professional qualifications of lecturers in the field of microchip design; cooperates with large companies in this field such as: Cadence, Synopsys, Renesas, Siemens, Microchip... to build and develop appropriate teaching content.

Similarly, in 2024, Vietnam - Korea University of Information and Communications Technology (VKU) will recruit 60 semiconductor design engineers. It is expected that by 2028, the total training quota will be from 600 to 1,000 engineers, and at the same time, the training program for majors related to semiconductors will be adjusted to convert students from year 1 (course 2023) to year 3 (course 2021), in order to meet the demand for human resources in this field. The first semiconductor design engineer training course in the 2024-2025 enrollment season at VKU is built according to an international standard training program, with a duration of 4.5 years and 160 credits.

In addition, 6 VKU lecturers completed the first source lecturer training course (out of a total of 25 lecturers selected from universities in the city); 6 VKU lecturers are studying the source lecturer training program on testing, packaging of microchips and semiconductors organized by Arizona State University (USA) under the sponsorship of the International Technology Security and Innovation Fund of the US Department of State.

In addition, VKU opens a master's training program, develops a research group on semiconductor microcircuits; builds a human resource training plan for packaging and testing semiconductor microcircuits; enrolls and trains upskills classes for students; develops and trains a team of lecturers. VKU puts into use the Center for Semiconductor Microcircuits and Smart Technology (VKU-SSTH); a laboratory and research center for New Technology and Semiconductor Microcircuits with Nam Long Group; strengthens cooperation with many domestic and foreign strategic partners such as: Institute of Information Technology (Hanoi National University); Institute of System Integration, Le Quy Don Technical University; FPT Software Company Central; Kyunghee University (Korea); Korea's leading system semiconductor microcircuit association (KFIA)...

There needs to be a specific mechanism in training.

Associate Professor Dr. Nguyen Huu Hieu, Principal of the University of Technology, said that with the strong development of the semiconductor industry and the trend of Da Nang becoming a center attracting semiconductor enterprises, improving the quality of semiconductor microprocessor human resource training is a key factor to meet the human resource needs of the locality as well as the whole country.

To achieve this goal, it is necessary to synchronously deploy many solutions from building training programs close to reality, developing modern facilities, training a team of highly specialized lecturers to expanding cooperation with businesses in the industry. Cooperation with businesses in the semiconductor industry is a very important factor in helping to improve the quality of human resource training.

“The school strengthens connections with domestic and foreign companies in this field to create many opportunities for knowledge sharing, practice, and internship for students,” Associate Professor, Dr. Nguyen Huu Hieu shared.

According to Associate Professor Dr. Nguyen Ngoc Vu, Director of Danang University, the city has a system of large universities with a large student population, an average of about 800 students per 10,000 people (4 times the national average); a team of highly qualified scientists with over 1,000 PhDs, Associate Professors, and Professors. These are favorable conditions for Danang to become a center for startups and innovation, a center for training human resources in semiconductor technology.

“The University of Danang is ready to carry out the task of training human resources in semiconductor technology according to the Government's project. However, to successfully implement the project, there needs to be a synchronous solution. In particular, the Government needs to soon approve the Project "Developing human resources for the semiconductor industry to 2030, with a vision to 2045" that the Ministry of Planning and Investment has developed and submitted to the Government, especially prioritizing the allocation of resources to implement the project, and at the same time having a specific mechanism for investment and procurement in the spirit of "breakthrough of breakthroughs" to successfully implement the project.

The Ministry of Education and Training needs to have a specific mechanism for training human resources for chips and semiconductors, especially the calculation of quotas and the number of permanent staff in the industry, which is closer to current regulations, because this is a new profession. However, it is necessary to have a solution to control the quality of training, avoid the situation of hundreds of flowers blooming, training according to trends leading to training quality not meeting the requirements of the international labor market. In the immediate future, priority should be given to assigning tasks to large universities with a tradition of training in technology and engineering, with potential in terms of teaching staff and good quality of incoming students," said Associate Professor, Dr. Nguyen Ngoc Vu.
