Sustainable forest development

Việt NamViệt Nam12/07/2024

Recognizing forestry as a potential and advantage in the province's economic development, in recent years, along with central government policies supporting forestry development, the province has issued many policies to support agricultural production, including forestry, bringing practical results.

Sustainable forest development

Forest rangers are raising awareness and encouraging people in Tu Vu commune, Thanh Thuy district, to convert their forests into plantations for large timber, which have high economic value.

In reality, policies supporting forestry development have gradually and fundamentally changed people's perceptions of forest protection and development, while encouraging them to actively participate in reforestation, creating a widespread movement.

The province currently has nearly 180,000 hectares of forest and forestry land, with a stable annual forest cover of 39.7%; creating jobs and increasing income for local people; and forming stable raw material areas for planted forest timber, serving the forest product processing industry.

As one of the localities with a large area of hilly and forested land, Thanh Son district has implemented many solutions over the years to make hilly and forest-based economy a key economic sector, bringing high economic efficiency. To date, the district has converted more than 500 hectares of forest to large timber trees.

To ensure the conversion to large-timber forest plantations and the annual forest planting targets, the District People's Committee has developed a specific plan, assigning the Forest Protection Department and specialized departments to closely coordinate with communes in the area to effectively carry out propaganda and guidance for people to care for and protect the forest so that the trees grow well and form large-timber forests.

Comrade Tran Quang Hung, Head of the Thanh Son Forest Ranger Station, said: The entire district has a total forest area and land planned for forest development of over 40,000 hectares. The people in the district mainly plant acacia and cinnamon trees. Identifying poverty reduction as one of the key tasks, with the goal of reducing poverty linked to the development of the hill and forest economy, focusing on large timber trees and medicinal plants, as a feasible solution, the district government has created all conditions to support people in developing the hill and forest economy, promoting the role of internal resources and self-reliance to escape poverty. Most localities in the district focus on developing large timber forests, and to date, forest cover has reached 50.5%.

Not only Thanh Son district, but also other districts with large areas of forest land such as Yen Lap, Tan Son, Doan Hung, and Ha Hoa have focused on promoting the development of production forests by planting new trees, transforming forests into large timber forests, and expanding the area certified as sustainable forests... contributing to improving the efficiency of production, productivity, quality, and value of planted forests. The indicators for forest protection and development each year have met and exceeded the set plan.

Annually, the province plants over 9,000 hectares of concentrated forest, including over 2,000 hectares of large timber trees and more than 2 million scattered trees, while also caring for nearly 30,000 hectares of planted forest. The timber harvest volume reaches 195,000 , and the average productivity of planted forests reaches 70 m³/ha/cycle.

The management and planning of the three types of forests are given priority, ensuring compliance with current laws and regulations. As a result, the forest area in the province is protected, exploited, used effectively, and developed sustainably, maximizing the potential and advantages of forestry.

Forest protection, fire prevention, and firefighting efforts have been strengthened; violations of laws on forest management, protection, and development have decreased in both the number of violations and the extent of damage; the value of forests is being gradually exploited and promoted in conjunction with the development of ecotourism and the provision of forest environmental services, ensuring sustainable development.

In the coming period, the agricultural sector will continue to strengthen the dissemination of laws on forest protection and development; actively and proactively advise and propose to the Provincial People's Committee, Party committees, and local authorities specific solutions in the management, protection, and development of forests and forest products in the locality. Emphasis will be placed on protecting existing forest areas, strengthening the management, protection, utilization, development, and fire prevention and control of forests, while improving forest quality for the goal of sustainable forest development.
