Developing distinctive products

Since being recognized as a 3-star OCOP product, the A'Đhir bag from the Za Ra Co Tu Brocade Weaving Cooperative (Ta Bhing commune, Nam Giang district) has become popular with many domestic and international customers.

Ms. Nguyen Thi Kim Lan, Director of the Za Ra Co Tu Brocade Weaving Cooperative, said that the cooperative currently has 28 members, all women from Za Ra village. The cooperative's products include bags, scarves, wallets, loincloths, cloaks, and skirts; among them, the A'Dhir bag has been awarded a 3-star OCOP rating.

"A'Đhir bags are meticulously crafted, highly functional in design, and feature unique patterns, which is why they are chosen by many people," said Ms. Lan.

According to Ms. Lan, since being recognized as a 3-star OCOP product, A'Đhir bags have sold better than many other products. This is partly because the bags are very compact and easy to use, making them very popular with customers. In 2024 alone, the Za Ra Co Tu Brocade Weaving Cooperative supplied approximately 800 product lines to the market, generating revenue of over 140 million VND.

Besides the A'Đhir bag product from the Za Ra Co Tu Brocade Weaving Cooperative, the mountainous district of Nam Giang now has 5 other products that have been ranked 3 stars in the OCOP program.

Includes: Pơ Riêng black pork from A Lung Trinh business; Hương Quyền papaya flowers pickled in honey from Văn Đình Quyền business; Đắc Hía pickled mustard greens from Zơ Râm Năm business; Nếp Tăm rice wine from Pơ Loong Vinh business; Thảo Nguyên chili salt from Hiên Khí business.

Mr. Nguyen Dang Chuong, Vice Chairman of the People's Committee of Nam Giang District, observed: "The OCOP program has contributed to changing the production practices of ethnic minority communities, unleashing the potential for commodity production of strong agricultural products, and creating a new direction in the production and business of traditional products with local advantages. Through this, it contributes to solving the employment problem, creating additional income, and improving the lives of the people…"

Many barriers

Nam Giang, with its large natural area and abundant resources, possesses unique and distinctive traditional cultural and culinary practices that could be preserved and developed into OCOP products. However, in the past six years, only six products have achieved 3-star OCOP status, indicating that the development of OCOP products in this district still faces many difficulties and obstacles.

Mr. Ho Van Luyen, Deputy Head of the Agriculture and Rural Development Department of Nam Giang district, said that the main difficulties in developing OCOP products in mountainous areas are the consumption market and brand building for the producers. Currently, most products are still consumed within the district and a few neighboring areas.

Furthermore, some entities participating in the OCOP program still have limitations in their capacity to prepare documentation. In particular, these entities lack initial capital to invest in building processing plants. Product designs, labels, and packaging are also quite simple; and production scale remains small and fragmented...

"Notably, most of Nam Giang's products are currently produced on a household scale, lacking strong linkages in production and consumption."

Some products could be produced collectively, but are currently still produced by individual households, making it difficult to manage, maintain, and develop them.

"The processing technology has not met the requirements, resulting in products that are mostly seasonal, unable to fulfill large orders or ensure a continuous and regular supply... All of these factors are considered obstacles in the process of developing OCOP products in Nam Giang," said Mr. Ho Van Luyen.

According to Mr. Nguyen Dang Chuong, in the coming time, Nam Giang will continue to enhance the role and responsibility of Party committees and authorities at all levels, especially at the grassroots level, in leading and directing the implementation of the OCOP program; and promote the strength of political and social organizations in implementing the program according to each specific content.

Encourage OCOP businesses to participate in linkage and trade promotion activities at supply and demand connection forums, establish connections on digital technology platforms, and participate in trade fairs to promote and connect OCOP and agricultural products; organize the evaluation and classification of OCOP products in a rigorous, objective, and compliant manner...

“The functional departments of Nam Giang will strive to further improve forecasting, information, planning, and planning management in the development of agricultural commodities and brand building for OCOP products; at the same time, they will soon form a close production chain and expand the market.”

Implement the "four-party" linkage along the value chain, developing diverse distribution channels. Establish standardized raw material areas to ensure supply meets market demands.

"In particular, Nam Giang continues to create favorable conditions for the development of agricultural and forestry cooperatives, calling on businesses to invest and participate in the deep processing of agricultural and forestry products bearing the district's OCOP brand to supply to the market..." - Mr. Chuong said.
