On May 6, information from the Ministry of Public Security's Hospital 199 in Da Nang said that the hospital had just successfully performed surgery on patient PT (49 years old, Co Tu ethnic group, residing in Bha Le commune, Tay Giang district, Quang Nam province) with Madelung disease (symmetrical multiple lipomatosis).
Previously, on May 3, patient PT was hospitalized with many large tumors under the skin. The tumors grew larger and larger, causing body deformation, compression of the bronchi, causing coughing, difficulty breathing, hoarseness, loss of aesthetics and loss of confidence in life.

Hospital 199 of the Ministry of Public Security mobilized many experienced doctors, coordinating with doctors from leading units in Ho Chi Minh City to perform surgery on the patient.
On May 5, the surgery lasting more than 7 hours was successful, removing more than 4 kg of fat from many tumors in the patient's neck, shoulders, and nape.
After surgery, if the patient complies with the doctor's treatment regimen, especially completely abstaining from alcohol, the rate of tumor recurrence or regrowth will be limited.

According to doctors at Hospital 199, Madelung disease, also known as Launois Bensaude syndrome or symmetrical subcutaneous fat accumulation disease, is benign. This disease is related to the disorder of symmetrical subcutaneous fat distribution around the neck, shoulders, torso, arms, upper thighs...
The neck and shoulder area is the most common location. Fat in this area makes the neck very large, so the disease also has another name, "Madelung's Collar".
According to Dr. Nguyen Huy Thong (Department of General Surgery, Hospital 199), Madelung is a rare disease, often found in middle-aged people who drink a lot of alcohol for many years.
