According to Associate Professor, Dr. Tran Ngoc Son, in early October, an Australian family (working in Indonesia) discovered that their 4-year-old daughter had pale stools, accompanied by abdominal pain and vomiting. Doctors in Indonesia discovered that she had a choledochal cyst and indicated open surgery.
After learning about the disease and studying the documents of Associate Professor, Dr. Tran Ngoc Son published at international conferences on the single-port laparoscopic surgery method to treat choledochal cysts, the family decided to bring their child to Vietnam and chose the High-Tech Center of Xanh Pon General Hospital as the place for surgery.
Doctor Son said that the patient had a 2 cm long bile duct, dilated into a diamond shape (normally the main bile cyst is dilated into a cyst, the bile duct is only 2 - 3 mm), if not operated on promptly, it will easily cause complications.
At the High-Tech Center of Xanh Pon General Hospital, after examination and testing, Dr. Son directly performed surgery on the patient using a single-hole laparoscopic method, with a small incision through the navel (if performing a four-hole laparoscopic surgery, the patient will have to have separate incisions).
This method has the advantage of being less painful, less damaging to the abdominal wall, the wound heals quickly and does not leave ugly scars, and controls the risk of complications to the maximum. The very small incision at the navel is a natural scar, so it will not leave a new scar. However, this is a difficult technique, requiring the surgeon to handle it very delicately and precisely, because the path to insert the instrument is very narrow, making it very difficult to operate during surgery.
In the surgery for the above patient, Dr. Son only made a 15 mm incision in the navel. After surgery, the patient recovered quickly and was able to run and jump after just a few days. 7 days after surgery, the patient was eligible for discharge.
Single-port laparoscopic treatment of choledochal cysts is a particularly difficult technique.
Vietnam is currently one of two countries in the world reporting successful application of this technique.
