Doctors from the Department of Digestive and General Surgery (Vietnam - Sweden Uong Bi Hospital) have successfully performed emergency surgery to treat a strangulated left inguinal hernia in a 35-day-old baby.
According to Ms. Pham Thi Hanh (Dong Trieu Town), the patient's mother, before being admitted to the hospital, the child showed signs of crying a lot and a bulge appeared in the left groin area. The family immediately took the child to the Vietnam - Sweden Uong Bi Hospital. After examination and necessary tests, the child was diagnosed with a strangulated left inguinal hernia.
Immediately, the doctors held an interdisciplinary consultation and performed emergency surgery on the child. After 30 minutes, the surgery was successful.
The child received intensive care and treatment at the hospital after surgery. Currently, the child's health is stable and he will be discharged in the next few days.
According to the doctor of the Department of Digestive and General Surgery, the rate of inguinal hernia in newborns is 1-2% and is often found in premature babies. Anesthesia, surgery and post-operative treatment for young children are very difficult. Because the structure in the inguinal canal of the child is very small, the surgery must be careful and meticulous to avoid damaging these anatomical structures, especially the vas deferens. The surgery must be performed quickly to avoid respiratory complications for the child.
Previously, doctors at Vietnam - Sweden Uong Bi Hospital successfully performed many inguinal hernia surgeries in young children and performed on many premature babies with the smallest weight at the time of surgery being 900 grams.
Doctors recommend that parents whose children have congenital inguinal hernias should take their children to the hospital early for consultation and surgery, to avoid waiting until the disease has progressed to a strangulated inguinal hernia before treatment, as emergency surgery carries many potential risks both during and after surgery.
