Inside Out 2 is the sequel to the 2015 hit film about the inner workings of a young girl's mind. In the second installment, the main character Riley has become a teenager and is struggling with new emotions including anxiety and jealousy.
Part 1 Inside Out opened with about $90 million in its opening weekend in the summer of 2015 and went on to gross $858.8 million worldwide.
Disney and Pixar's Inside Out 2 is the first film of the year to gross $1 billion at the global box office.
After 19 days of release, the sequel has grossed $469.3 million in North America and $545.5 million worldwide , bringing its global total to $1.015 billion. It is one of 11 animated films to join the billion-dollar club (eight of which are Disney films) and the fastest animated film to do so.
Actress Maya Hawke voices the character Anxiety in the movie Inside Out 2
When Inside Out 2 hit theaters on June 14, it smashed expectations with $151 million domestically, surpassing Dune: Part 2 ($711 million) for the biggest opening of the year. It was also the first film since last July, when the blockbuster Barbie grossed $162 million domestically (opening above $100 million). Since then, Inside Out 2 has held the No. 1 spot at the box office for three consecutive weekends and is poised to become the highest-grossing film domestically and globally by 2024. Earlier this week, it surpassed the total gross of its 2015 predecessor Inside Out ($859 million worldwide).
Inside Out 2 was a box office success thanks to a number of factors, including the positive reception of the 2015 original and great word of mouth. The sequel hits the big screen nearly 10 years after the original adventure, which involved a young girl named Riley's emotions Joy (voiced by Amy Poehler), Sadness (Phyllis Smith), Anger (Lewis Black). The Kelsey Mann-directed sequel picks up with a teenage Riley discovering new emotions Anxiety (Maya Hawke), Envy (Ayo Edebiri), Embarrassment (Paul Walter Hauser), and Nostalgia (June Squibb) as she attends a summer hockey camp.
