On the evening of March 5th (US time), to commemorate the 30th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Vietnam and the United States, the Vietnam Film Development Promotion Association (VFDA), in collaboration with the Vietnamese Embassy in the US and the Motion Picture Association of America, organized a special screening of the film " Don't Cry, Butterfly " by female director Duong Dieu Linh.
Hundreds of guests attended the film premiere.
Attending the film premiere were Mr. Nguyen Quoc Dung - Vietnamese Ambassador to the US; Dr. Ngo Phuong Lan - President of VFDA, former Director of the Vietnam Film Department; Mr. Charlie Rivkin - President and CEO of MPA, along with hundreds of guests including leaders and representatives of MPA member studios, ambassadors and representatives of embassies of several countries, international organizations, film producers, leading experts in the field of cinema...
The film premiere is part of a series of Vietnamese film activities in the US from February 28 to March 13, aiming to help position Vietnam's film industry internationally, create opportunities for expanded cooperation, enhance cultural exchange, and promote Vietnamese cinema in the international market.
Director Duong Dieu Linh shared that while making this film, she tried to find answers to why women have to endure so much.
Speaking at the event, Dr. Ngo Phuong Lan emphasized that the screening of a Vietnamese film at the MPA is not only an opportunity to promote the work but also helps Vietnamese cinema get closer to the international market.
"Today's film screening is a particularly important milestone, not only introducing Vietnamese cinema to international audiences but also demonstrating the increasingly deep connection between the film industries of the two countries. We hope this event will open up many new opportunities for cooperation, bringing Vietnamese films closer to the global market," Dr. Lan shared.
Dr. Ngo Phuong Lan and director Duong Dieu Linh discussed future film collaborations with the MPA President and the Vietnamese Ambassador to the United States.
Director Duong Dieu Linh stated that the film "Rain on Butterfly Wings" tells the story of a middle-aged woman (played by Meritorious Artist Tu Oanh) who tries everything to win her husband back after discovering his infidelity. She seeks the help of an online sorcerer to perform a ritual, but inadvertently awakens an unexpected spiritual force. The film has a unique storytelling style, leaving a strong impression and receiving much praise from the audience.
Previously, the film's script was presented by director Duong Dieu Linh at a filmmaking workshop organized by MPA in Ho Chi Minh City and won first prize in the competition.
Following the screening, producers and representatives from film studios expressed interest in the filmmaking style and potential of young Vietnamese filmmakers.
For many years, VFDA and MPA have collaborated with government agencies to protect copyrights and combat intellectual property infringement in Vietnam.
Dr. Ngo Phuong Lan added that VFDA is honored to collaborate with MPA in organizing workshops and idea competitions for young filmmakers, and to cooperate with MPA and government agencies to protect copyright and combat intellectual property infringement in Vietnam for many years.
MPA President Charlie Rivkin emphasized that the premiere of "Rain on Butterfly Wings" not only marked an important milestone in the journey of promoting Vietnamese cinema but also created opportunities for domestic filmmakers to connect, learn from experience, and look towards future collaborative projects with film producers in the United States.
