Nam O fishing village not only boasts beautiful scenery but is also famous for its royal fish sauce, seaweed (seaweed jam), and a 700-year-old cultural and historical heritage.

Despite its rich natural resources, scenic landscapes, and cultural legends, the lives of the people of Nam O remain difficult, mainly due to near-shore exploitation, which impacts aquatic resources and people's livelihoods, and poses a risk of depletion.

Nam O Street food stalls attract many tourists.

Mr. Nguyen Ha Bac, Secretary of the Lien Chieu District Party Committee, shared that the issue of job retraining for fishermen, aiming for efficient and sustainable exploitation, has always been a priority for the local authorities, who are constantly seeking solutions.

Last April, Lien Chieu District, the Department of Tourism , and Trung Thuy Group implemented a program to support the chuyển đổi nghề nghiệp (career transition) of people in Nam O, including donating 50 food carts to households doing business in Nam O Street Food with a total value of 500 million VND.

Trung Thuy Group also provided 600 million VND to 50 disadvantaged households to help them start businesses in the Street Food area, or to create livelihoods, learn and receive vocational training, and have a proactive and stable source of income instead of depending on traditional seafood fishing, in the context of dwindling aquatic resources.

According to a survey by the People's Committee of Lien Chieu District, fishing along the Nam O coast typically operates from 4 to 8 a.m. Fishermen want to work during the rest of the day, but they are mostly unskilled laborers with unstable incomes.

Therefore, the creation of Nam O Street Food has solved the problem of "leisure time" for local people, suitable for developing the local economy through entertainment and food services to increase income. At the same time, with the characteristics of the local people, the people of Nam O have a high sense of responsibility in preserving the tourism environment, acting as ambassadors of a land rich in culture and products.

In addition, the Nam O Street food area is being developed in conjunction with Nguyen Tat Thanh Street Park, contributing to the creation of a new tourist destination and product, attracting visitors this summer.

Opened on April 28th, Nam O Street Food operates from 6 PM to 11 PM daily, including holidays. Thanks to meeting the needs of the community, this specialized street food area is operating effectively.

Ms. Nguyen Thi Tam, 43 years old, residing in Hoa Hiep Nam Ward, Lien Chieu District, recounted: "Previously, I just stayed at home cooking and helping my husband with fishing, with an unstable income because there weren't many fish near the shore anymore. Since receiving support to join the Nam O Street Food Market, I have a cart selling herring salad and other specialties such as Nam O fish sauce and sea jam… My initial income is very good, especially on weekends when there are many people from Nam O."

Mr. Nguyen Dang Huy, Chairman of the People's Committee of Lien Chieu District, shared that the success of the vocational retraining model for the people of Nam O serves as a foundation for research and application in other fishing villages, aiming to protect aquatic resources and promote sustainable local economic development.
