Implementing the decision of the Ministry of Health on establishing inspection teams, guiding and supervising the preservation and use of Covid-19 vaccines in the provinces. On April 10 and 12, a working group of the Pasteur Institute of Ho Chi Minh City led by Dr. Nguyen Vu Thuong - Deputy Director of the Pasteur Institute, came to inspect Tay Ninh.
Inspection team in Trang Bang ward
The delegation inspected the actual preservation and use of Covid-19 vaccines at Trang Bang Ward Health Station (Trang Bang town), Ninh Son Ward Health Station (Tay Ninh city), City Health Center and Provincial Center for Disease Control.
Actual records at Trang Bang Ward Health Station show that in nearly 3 years of implementing Covid-19 vaccination, the Health Station has coordinated well with departments and branches to implement. However, since the end of 2022, the vaccination work has slowed down due to many objective reasons.
Inspections in Trang Bang ward showed that the rate of Covid-19 vaccination for the first and second doses reached 100%, and for the third and fourth doses reached about 70% in the group of people over 18 years old. For the age group from 12-17, the first and second doses reached more than 100%; the age group from 5-11 years old respectively reached the first dose: 80%, the second dose: 64%.
In Ninh Son ward, according to the report of the Health Station, the group of people over 18 years old who received the first injection reached 94.29%, the second injection reached 87.08%; the third injection reached 48.31% and the fourth injection reached 11.31%. For the age group from 12-17, the first and second injections reached more than 80%. The age group from 5-11 years old respectively reached: first injection: 70%, second injection: 50%.
According to a report from the Tay Ninh City Medical Center, from the second half of 2022, some vaccine batches have been distributed more than local demand; the epidemic has decreased, most people and children by age group do not agree to be vaccinated for many reasons such as: illness, fever to delay.
Regarding storage, the health center currently has 3 cabinets, using 1 cabinet to store the remaining Covid-19 vaccines (vaccines not yet released and those sent by the health station). The temperature for storing the vaccines is guaranteed.
The delegation highly appreciated the Covid-19 vaccination work in the two above-mentioned localities, with high vaccine usage efficiency. However, it is necessary to properly assess local needs to ensure vaccine supply.
Working with Tay Ninh CDC on the preservation and use of Covid-19 vaccines, up to now, the total number of vaccines allocated: 3,244,084 doses, meeting 90.4% of the vaccine demand for all subjects according to regulations. Total vaccines received: 3,189,784 doses. Currently, the whole province still has 12,689 doses of vaccine with expiry date, CDC has distributed to districts to proactively deploy vaccination.

The number of expired vaccines is 124,258 doses, CDC has sent written reports asking for opinions on how to handle it. At the same time, the plan for vaccine demand in the last 6 months of 2023 is 8,545 doses, this is the number of subjects who have agreed to participate in Covid-19 vaccination after reviewing subjects who have not been vaccinated or have not received enough doses in the community. Districts are continuing to review to summarize the expected number of subjects and vaccine demand.
Concluding the working session, Dr. Nguyen Vu Thuong - Deputy Director of Pasteur Institute - Head of the working delegation highly appreciated the close attention of the Steering Committee for Disease Prevention and Control at all levels, the Department of Health, the Provincial Center for Disease Control in directing, operating, inspecting, guiding, and supervising the implementation of Covid-19 vaccination of departments, branches, organizations, and units in the area to effectively implement disease prevention and control work.
However, Tay Ninh province is facing a number of epidemic risk factors such as: recording a number of cases in the community, some places have a lower rate of Covid-19 vaccination than expected, high population mobility, and a large number of immigrants.
Dr. Nguyen Vu Thuong suggested strengthening communication activities to help people understand the importance and benefits of Covid-19 vaccination, especially communication activities in industrial parks, factories, enterprises and schools. Thereby increasing the vaccination coverage rate to protect people from the epidemic.
Conduct random household surveys to quickly assess the Covid-19 vaccination situation in the community to have an overall picture of the actual vaccination rate in the community, from which measures can be taken to increase the Covid-19 vaccination rate.
