Phong Du Thuong develops green tourism

Phong Du Thuong (formerly Van Yen district, Yen Bai province, now Lao Cai province) is endowed by nature with many majestic and poetic landscapes with the Khe Tau village terraced fields. In the Khe Tau terraced fields, there are unique raspberry hills with a total area of nearly 50 hectares, the highest peak is about 1,000 meters above sea level, from which you can see the whole view of Phong Du Thuong commune and some neighboring communes.

Along with the majestic natural scenery, Khe Tau village also has many unique culinary dishes: hill chicken, native black pig, bamboo shoots, upland sticky rice, taro; traditional festivals, typical cultural features such as: long tong festival, senh tien dance, khen dance, leaf trumpet... In addition to the terraced fields in Khe Tau village, there is a hot spring area in Cao Son village, 4 km from the commune center, which has formed a community tourism model. The Khe Ban waterfall area, in Ban Lung village and Khe Mang waterfall in Khe Mang village, 4 - 6 km from the commune center, are being exploited by the locality to develop tourism activities, serving sightseeing and relaxation.

In order to turn tourism into a spearhead economic sector, Phong Du Thuong commune has proactively reviewed, adjusted, supplemented the master plan and developed a detailed plan for tourism development. Along with attracting investment resources, the locality has developed many types of tourism, based on exploiting and promoting the value of natural landscapes in the area. At the end of August 2024, Phong Du Thuong commune organized activities to launch green tourism products and the Khe Tau terraced fields festival, making tourism a key goal in the local socio-economic development.

Mr. Lu A Do, Secretary of Khe Tau village Party Cell, shared: “With the development of the tourism industry, the terraced fields of the Mong people in Khe Tau village have become a unique tourism product, attracting many domestic and foreign tourists to visit and admire. Currently, there are 2 households providing homestay services to serve tourists to visit, experience and learn about the lives of the people”.

Along with that, the commune also mobilizes prestigious people among ethnic minorities and artisans of the commune to open classes to teach folk songs and dances to the young generation in conjunction with building art troupes in villages; preserving traditional folk games and sports... to meet the needs of enjoyment and experience of tourists.

Up to now, 8/8 villages of the commune have built art troupes, created tourism products with strong cultural identity, attracting a large number of tourists to visit, stay and experience. Currently, Phong Du Thuong commune has built 3 cultural tourism villages, 8 homestay models and 2 community tourism cooperatives.

On the basis of exploiting and promoting the value of natural landscapes associated with traditional festivals of the people, the locality encourages tourism and travel businesses to exploit and connect with tourism tours; strengthen coordination in vocational training for people in developing traditional occupations, creating typical products for tourists to visit, shop and experience when coming to the locality.

By fully exploiting the potential for tourism development, from the beginning of 2025 until now, there have been over 8,500 visitors coming to visit, experience and stay in Phong Du Thuong; of which 8,000 are domestic visitors, over 500 are foreign visitors, an increase of nearly 300% compared to the previous year, with revenue reaching 4.5 billion VND.

To develop sustainable green tourism, Phong Du Thuong commune has built a detailed tourism development plan, clearly identifying areas for homestay development, trekking routes; developing eco-tourism products, community tourism to experience culture and life, combining visits to medicinal gardens, learning about the process and experiencing directly; agricultural tourism and craft villages.

Along with that, the locality prioritizes resources to upgrade and solidify inter-village roads; develop human resources for green tourism, promote and build the local green tourism brand.

At the end of August 2025, Phong Du Thuong commune launched green tourism products, making tourism activities the main goal in local socio-economic development.

With majestic natural landscapes, rich and diverse ecosystems, unique cultural identities preserved and conserved, when the project connecting National Highway 32 with Noi Bai - Lao Cai Expressway (IC 15) is completed and passes through the commune, it will create conditions for Phong Du Thuong to exploit and promote tourism development potential with the province's regions and areas, creating livelihoods for people, contributing to environmental protection and preserving cultural traditions.
