Sharing with VietNamNet , a parent whose child studies at My Dinh 2 Secondary School ( Hanoi ) said that recently, in a meeting between the parents' committee and the school's leadership, the principal said that on special occasions, the school has to rent a projector for students to watch, costing up to 15 million VND/time, very expensive.
A parent representing the standing committee proposed a plan to give the school a 100-inch TV worth 40 million VND, of which 7 6th grade classes, each class paid 3 million VND. The remaining amount would be mobilized from other classes, an average of 1 million VND/class. The reason is that new 6th grade students do not have to pay for air conditioning left by the classes that have graduated, so they "support" more.
“Many parents were upset, thinking that the standing committee was an ‘extension of the school’. Many people stood up to protest right at the meeting because they thought there was no consensus from the parents of the classes,” she said.
According to this parent, parents fully support contributions to improve the quality of teaching and learning for their children, but buying a TV worth tens of millions that does not directly serve daily learning is too wasteful.
In addition to the cost of buying a TV, parents are also upset about having to pay for painting and buying curtains for the classroom. The total cost of these expenses is nearly ten million VND per class.

Opening ceremony of My Dinh 2 Secondary School.
Regarding this issue, speaking with VietNamNet , Ms. Bui Thi Ngoc Lan, Principal of My Dinh 2 Secondary School, affirmed that the school did not encourage or require parents to buy televisions for the school.
“At the end of August, the school held a meeting with the parents’ committee to announce the opening ceremony plan, stating that this year the children would attend the ceremony in class. Because the school’s wifi connection is weak, the school hopes that parents will support the internet connection so that the children can watch the opening ceremony online smoothly.
However, because parents were worried that if the internet connection was not good, the meaning of the opening ceremony would be lost, they suggested buying a large screen TV so that all students could sit in the yard to attend the opening ceremony solemnly. This was the parents' initiative to propose, the school did not request or demand anything," Ms. Lan said.
The principal also said that after making such a proposal, the school's parent committee also asked for opinions from parents representing each class and received agreement. Initially, the parents suggested buying a 75-inch TV, but later decided to buy a 100-inch TV.
“This is a sharing between parents and the school. The parent committee does not appoint people but is based on the spirit of volunteerism,” said the principal.
In response to parents' feedback, Ms. Lan said she would discuss with the school's parent committee and the parent committees of the classes.
“If there is a TV, it will be very helpful for the children to experience activities in the school yard every week, but if parents have opposing opinions, the school is willing to return the TV to the parents,” said the principal.
