Through many ups and downs, the art of Bài Chòi (NTBC) is still preserved, becoming an indispensable spiritual food for the people of the South Central Coast in general and Phu Yen in particular.

In the space of the festival Promoting and connecting tourism of cities in the Central Highlands - Tuy Hoa 2023 that just took place at April 1st Square (Tuy Hoa City), the sound of the guitar and the rhythm of the drums were bustling with each call/sing of the brothers and sisters of the Hieu in the folk bai choi festival, helping the atmosphere of the coastal city become more joyful with its own color.

Preserving traditional culture

During the nights of this festival, a large crowd gathered around the NTBC performance area of the Folk Music Club of Ward 5 (Tuy Hoa City). The audience was especially delighted with the witty verses of Mr./Ms. Hieu: Years ago, I came here/ Saw Miss Sau Nho jumping rope on the side of the road/ Today I returned here/ Still Miss Sau Nho jumping rope on the side of the road or Let's go to the Bai Choi festival/ Let's make the child cry until his intestines come out...

According to Ms. Hua Thi Gui, Head of the Folk Song Club of Ward 5, over time, NTBC still maintains its core values, which are community spirit and solidarity. Most of the Thai verses are experiences drawn from our grandparents, botheducational and respectful of human morality. The Thai verses associated with each card have their own meaning. There are verses that sound vulgar at first but are very elegant. Playing Bai Choi is also a way for adults to tell their children and grandchildren about the good and the beauty, the profound meanings hidden in each call and song.

“We are very happy to organize the Bai Choi festival in the space of the festival to promote and connect tourism of cities in the Central Highlands - Tuy Hoa 2023. The Bai Choi festival creates a poetic playground for people and friends, tourists from near and far. We feel proud to contribute to preserving the precious cultural heritage of the nation, promoting tourism activities and festivals of the people of Phu Yen coastal region”, Ms. Gui confided.

Nguyen Khac Ha Dan - daughter of Ms. Gui, also Ms. Hieu who calls the card game, expressed: "Born into a family with a tradition of NTBC, I was fortunate to have access to NTBC early. Through the card game association, I hope to contribute my efforts to preserving this unique art form, a precious heritage of our nation and of humanity, from being lost in the vibrant music market with different imported music genres like today."

Promote the image of the homeland

The Bài Chòi festival attracts both locals and many tourists to come here to enjoy. Adults and children alike, just sitting on the huts are already excited. When Mr. Hieu and Ms. Hieu started to shout, no one could sit still, their hands kept tapping the bamboo tubes to the rhythm... Mr. Phan Xuan Thanh in An Phu commune (Tuy Hoa city) shared: “To me, Bài Chòi is very familiar. Born in the land of Nau, since I was a child I have heard many people sing Bài Chòi. Nowadays, children hardly know Bài Chòi, so I often take my children to see it. After a while, the children gradually understand and love Bài Chòi more.”

Ms. Le Thi Thanh Truc, a tourist from Ho Chi Minh City, felt: “This summer, my husband and I took our children to Phu Yen for a trip. Seeing the local people organizing a Bai Choi festival, we really liked it and joined in. This was the first time I participated and learned what Bai Choi was like. The artists chanted and sang the Thai verses with very familiar and funny content. Coming to Phu Yen to visit beautiful landscapes, enjoy fresh seafood, and participate in a fun Bai Choi festival like this left me with many good impressions. If I come back here, I will definitely participate in the Bai Choi festival again.”

The Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism has issued a plan to implement the project to Protect and promote the value of intangible cultural heritage of Central Vietnam's NTBC in Phu Yen province in 2023. Accordingly, the Department of Culture will focus on training in the field of Bài Chòi; organizing NTBC performances combined with some traditional art forms; supporting equipment (sound, musical instruments, costumes, cards, huts...) for Bài Chòi clubs in the province; bringing NTBC into schools; and at the same time promoting communication, promotion and summarizing this project.

According to Mr. Nguyen Ngoc Thai, Deputy Director of the Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism, the implementation of the activities in the plan will contribute to preserving, promoting and popularizing the cultural heritage of Phu Yen folk singing, serving the enjoyment needs and improving the cultural life of the people. Thereby, linking cultural heritage with local tourism development, attracting and mobilizing resources for the conservation and promotion of the cultural heritage value of folk singing in the province. "Nhat Bac Bac Viet Nam is recognized by UNESCO as an intangible cultural heritage of humanity. This is a source of pride, but it also comes with the responsibility of each of us to preserve, conserve and promote NTBC. Therefore, the Bai Choi festival is an opportunity to introduce and promote the value of the heritage of NTBC in Central Vietnam in general, and Phu Yen in particular, to domestic and international friends...", Mr. Thai acknowledged.
