Women's costumes shine in 'Dune' Part 2

The costumes in Dune (directed by Denis Villeneueve) surprised and overwhelmed audiences because the creative team did not have any specific instructions other than the original text by the late author Frank Herbert. Zendaya's character, Chani, receives more attention in the second season. Jacqueline West said she drew inspiration for Margot Fenring's outfits from Balenciaga and 1950s Parisian fashion , aiming to make the character elegant yet mysterious.

Princess Irulan, played by actress Florence Pugh, made her first appearance in Dune , but her costume immediately captivated viewers with its elegance, nobility, and yet strong, resolute character.

When designing the costume for this character, the designer initially intended a simple design as described by the author in the novel. However, as a member of the Bene Gesserit Order, in addition to the inherent elegance, the character's attire was altered. This was because she would succeed her father, the Emperor, and she was also a nun. To "refresh" the character, the designer referenced medieval costumes, most evident in the character's headdress, which always cradles her short hair.

Irulan is a female character who appears infrequently, but her costume required a great deal of time to create because the accompanying accessories were entirely handmade. The team spent weeks sewing the princess's hats according to patterns that Jacqueline West and her crew discovered while observing nuns at Christian schools.

Irulan is also a warrior. Therefore, metal is used as the material for his costume.

Irulan isn't the only female character with a hooded costume in Dune Part 2. The character with the most outstanding portrayal is Lady Jessica, played by Rebecca Ferguson, a Bene Gesserit. In the first part, Lady Jessica appeared in a restrictive, cord-filled outfit, more like a maid than a queen – highlighting the status of women within the Atreides family. But in Part 2, Lady Jessica chooses a religious path, becoming a new voice for the Fremen spirit.

The character's costume is primarily inspired by the fabrics and clothing customs of the Touareg culture in Morocco. Lady Jessica's attire is also partly inspired by medieval clothing. The dark, layered yet extremely lightweight fabric she wears and drapes over her head is designed to block sunlight.

As the story progresses, this character demonstrates an immense influence on the beliefs of the planet Arrakis. Her attire becomes even more mysterious, darker in color, with a "mask" covering her face, as she has now become the Supreme Mother and launched a holy war.

Continuing the events of the first film, Dune Part 2 tells the story of the dramatic upheavals on the sand planet Arrakis, where a new religion is emerging, kindling a powerful force against the Emperor's throne and the great families. The Fremen, from the sand dunes across the desert, are secretly planning a new war that will strike fear into the Emperor's heart. In the film, actor Timothée Chalamet shines in the role of Paul "Muad'Dib" Atreides. Alongside him, the cast also includes Austin Butler, Josh Brolin, Dave Bautista, Javier Bardem, and others.

At the 2022 Academy Awards, Dune received 10 nominations, including Best Costume Design for Jacqueline West and her collaborator Robert Morgan. The film won 6 awards, including visual effects, music , and cinematography.
