Women's costumes shine in 'Dunes' part 2

The costumes in Dune (director: Denis Villeneuve) surprised and overwhelmed the audience because the creative team did not have any specific instructions other than the original text by the late author Frank Herbert. Zendaya's character Chani was more carefully crafted in part 2. Princess Irulan, played by actress Florence Pugh, first appeared in Dune , but her character's costume immediately created sympathy among viewers because of its elegance, nobility, but also strength and determination.

When creating the costume for this character, the designer originally intended to design it simply as described by the author in the novel, but since this is a member of the Bene Gesserit Order, in addition to the inherent elegance, this character was given a different costume. The reason is that this is the character who will succeed her father - the Emperor - and she is also a nun. To "refresh" the character, the designer referred to medieval costumes, which is most clearly shown in the character's hat - which always covers her short hair.

Irulan is a female character who appears only a few times, but her costumes took a long time to make, as her accessories were all hand-made. The team spent weeks sewing the princess's hats, following patterns that Jacqueline West and her team discovered while visiting Christian schools to observe nuns.

Irulan is also a warrior. Therefore, the material used to make this character's costume is also metal.

Irulan isn't the only female character to wear a hooded costume in Dune 2. The character who gets the most attention in the film is Lady Jessica, played by Rebecca Ferguson, a Bene Gesserit. In the first film, Lady Jessica appears in a tight, strappy outfit that looks more like a maid than a queen - showing the status of women in the Atreides family. But in Part 2, Lady Jessica chooses a religious path for herself, becoming a new voice for the spirit of the Fremen.

The character's costume is largely inspired by the fabrics and dress customs of the Touareg culture of Morocco. Lady Jessica's costume is also partly inspired by medieval dress. The dark, multi-layered, but extremely light fabric that the character wears and covers her head with was created to block out the sun.

In the later stages of the work, this character shows his immense influence on the beliefs on the planet Arrakis. The character's costume becomes more mysterious, darker in color, with a "mask" covering his face, because at this time the character has become the Supreme Mother and launched a holy war.

Following the events of the first part, Dune 2 tells the story of the violent upheavals on the sand planet Arrakis, when a new religion is forming here, sparking an extremely powerful force against the throne of the Emperor and the great families. The Fremen, from the sand dunes across the desert, are secretly planning a new war that will make even the Emperor tremble. In the film, actor Timothée Chalamet shines as Paul "Muad'Dib" Atreides.
