In accordance with Resolution No. 1036/NQ-UBTVQH15 dated June 16, 2025, of the Standing Committee of the National Assembly on the rearrangement of commune-level administrative units in Hanoi City, from July 1, 2025, Cua Nam Ward will be officially established.

This is one of Hanoi's new central wards, formed by merging the entire natural area and population of the following wards: Tran Hung Dao, Hang Bai, Phan Chu Trinh (belonging to Hoan Kiem district); most of the natural area and population of Cua Nam ward (belonging to Hoan Kiem district); and parts of the natural area and population of the following wards: Hang Bong, Hang Trong, Trang Tien (belonging to Hoan Kiem district); Pham Dinh Ho, Nguyen Du (belonging to Hai Ba Trung district).

This video provides an overview of Cua Nam ward, which was recently established and began operations on July 1, 2025:

The headquarters of the Party Committee, People's Council, People's Committee, Fatherland Front, and political and social organizations of Cua Nam Ward are located at 21 Ba Trieu Street. The reason for naming the new ward Cua Nam is because of its location near the Southeast Gate of Thang Long Citadel during the Nguyen Dynasty. Cua Nam was originally part of Yen Trung Thuong village, Tien Nghiem commune (later renamed Vinh Xuong), Tho Xuong district.

Accordingly, the choice of the name Cửa Nam ensures that the administrative unit's name retains historical, traditional, and cultural value, while also adhering to the principle of prioritizing the use of one of the names of the administrative units before the merger to name the new commune or ward, minimizing the impact on citizens and businesses due to the need to change documents.

The ward borders Hong Ha, Van Mieu - Quoc Tu Giam, Ba Dinh, and Hoan Kiem wards. With an area of approximately 1.68 km² and a population of over 52,000 people, Cua Nam is one of the largest wards, holding a central position in terms of politics, administration, culture, and history, making it one of the most important wards in Hanoi.

Cửa Nam Ward is a "synthesis" of the finest cultural, historical, religious, and architectural characteristics of the thousand-year-old Thang Long - Hanoi region. It was once a vibrant center of revolutionary activity, marking many significant events in the history of the formation and development of the Communist Party of Vietnam: House 5D Ham Long, where the first Communist Party cell in Hanoi was established; AVIA Factory, 90 Tho Nhum, 25 Doan Nhu Hai, 62 Tran Quoc Toan - red addresses associated with the patriotic movement; Trung Vuong High School (26 Hang Bai), Ngo Si Lien High School (27 Ham Long) - places that nurtured many generations of patriotic students, and were visited by President Ho Chi Minh on several occasions...

Cua Nam boasts a diverse system of religious relics with ancient architecture, such as Quan Su Pagoda - the headquarters of the Vietnam Buddhist Association; Ham Long Pagoda, Thien Quan Temple, Ham Long Church, Nam Ngu Communal House… Majestic Theatre, the French School of Far Eastern Studies, and old French villas along Tran Hung Dao - Quang Trung - Phan Chu Trinh streets… All these structures not only have artistic value but also serve as historical and cultural evidence, contributing to shaping the urban identity of Hanoi.

Cua Nam Ward is the heart of the city, home to many major thoroughfares such as Tran Hung Dao, Ly Thuong Kiet, Quang Trung, Hai Ba Trung, Nguyen Du, etc. It also houses numerous interprovincial bus stations, administrative offices, universities, and ministerial headquarters. This strategic location gives Cua Nam a unique advantage in developing its service economy, logistics, culture and education, and international cooperation.

Speaking to reporters, a representative from Cua Nam ward stated: “Cua Nam is a land rich in heritage and cultural depth, but also a place of dynamic and creative development. The ward will focus on three key areas: preserving heritage in conjunction with tourism development; comprehensive digital transformation in urban management and administrative reform; and developing high-quality cultural, commercial, and service industries to improve the lives of its residents.”

One of the key tasks that Cua Nam ward will focus on and invest in during the 2025-2030 period is heritage preservation and tourism development. The ward will continue to review, classify, and restore historical, revolutionary, and religious relics; organize tours and educational trips; and collaborate with tourism companies to exploit the advantages of an "open-air museum" in the heart of Hanoi.

In addition, the ward is strengthening control over construction order; improving lighting systems, water supply/drainage infrastructure, greenery, signage, etc.; and gradually building a friendly, green, clean, and beautiful urban space.

In particular, Cua Nam ward has identified the need to accelerate the implementation of digital government, utilizing open data platforms, online public services, and smart urban monitoring systems to improve management efficiency and better serve the people.

Chairman of the Hanoi People's Committee Tran Sy Thanh congratulated the Party Committee of Cua Nam Ward.

The establishment of Cửa Nam ward is not only a government decision but also a long-awaited aspiration of the people in central Hanoi. Observations in residential areas show high levels of consensus and expectation from the community. Mr. Dương Công Thọ (65 years old, Hàm Long street) shared: “I was born and raised here and have witnessed many changes in the city. The establishment of the new ward will streamline the administrative apparatus, provide faster service to the people, and eliminate the fragmentation between smaller wards. I strongly support it.”

Ms. Nguyen Minh Hang, a resident of Quang Trung Street, said: “Cua Nam Ward has great tourism potential. I hope the government will soon have policies to support businesses, preserve the old town's facades, and promote heritage tourism routes combining cuisine and culture.”

Ms. Hang also expects Cua Nam ward to take the lead in building a digital government. With a high level of education and access to technology, it is necessary to quickly apply comprehensive online public services to save time for both the government and the people.

The establishment of Cua Nam Ward is a natural outcome of modern urban development and a correct step in the roadmap to building a streamlined, effective, and efficient two-tiered local government model. Cua Nam Ward is not only a place preserving the historical and cultural values of Hanoi, but also a land promising many opportunities for creative and sustainable development. From heritage to innovation, Cua Nam Ward today carries a great mission: to become a new symbol in the heart of the thousand-year-old capital city.
