Singer Phuong My Chi surprised everyone when her closing performance of Sing! Asia was a completely new song called Chopsticks .
The song was composed by DTAP, Phuong My Chi, Pealhope and Thyself (INUS). The main lyrics are in English, plus Japanese, Chinese, and Thai, written by many people. The Chinese lyrics were written by Dao Tu A1J, singer of the song Em xinh say hi .
Convey solidarity, not focus on winning or losing
The performance video was published by Phuong My Chi on the morning of July 27 on YouTube, quickly reaching more than 600,000 views with more than 3,000 comments, most of which were complimentary.
" Chopsticks is a gift Chi wants to send to Sing! Asia , where Chi lives in love, connection and indescribable emotions from friends and audiences across Asia.
Phuong My Chi sings Chopsticks in Sing! Asia
The moment 30 children in traditional costumes from Asian countries stood together on stage, harmonizing to a melody that was both familiar and new... is one of the memories that Chi will remember forever" - Phuong My Chi shared on the morning of July 27.
Choosing the story of Vietnamese chopsticks as the theme of the song, the singer and crew hope that no matter where we come from, we can still support each other like fragile but strong chopsticks when walking together. The song is Chi's gratitude to her crew, her companions.
Responding to Tuoi Tre Online, Mr. Phan Anh - Phuong My Chi's representative - said that the crew did not care about winning or losing and chose this performance to spread the message of solidarity and peace .
He said: "From the beginning, we determined to bring Vietnamese culture to the world . One of the typical spirits of the Vietnamese people is solidarity, mutual support and love, expressed through many literary works and songs that we have listened to since childhood.
With Chopsticks, we want Asian audiences to see the spirit of solidarity and culture of Vietnamese people through the story of a bundle of chopsticks.
We don't care about winning or losing. This is an international competition and also aims for Asian unity. Chopsticks fits the criteria of the competition and has been well received."
Some viewers commented that the song is even more meaningful at a time when there are conflicts in the region. But Mr. Phan Anh said that the crew did not focus on politics, but that in any era, Vietnamese people are always united and love each other.
Phuong My Chi and the song about Zhuge Liang attracts attention
Chopsticks has English-based lyrics, singing about a father and his children and the story of a bundle of chopsticks, then expanding into an international story.
"We're Asian. Asians shine in the galaxy. Though small, together we shine. When we hold our hands together. We will never end, together. Brave and bold can't be sold. Like the chopsticks when they're held as one..." are the lyrics calling on Asians to unite, be brave and resilient.
The song's Chinese lyrics include a line taken from a Chinese idiom meaning "Three shoemakers are better than one Zhuge Liang", which promotes solidarity and collective wisdom.
"We want to show respect for cultural values not only of Vietnam but also of other countries," Phan Anh explained.

Integrating spiritual and cultural values into a performance may not be the most important criteria for winning. It can be seen that Japanese singer Miyuna won convincingly at Sing! Asia in terms of vocals.
But Phuong My Chi's choice to sing Chopsticks right at the competition seems to be aimed at a long-term goal. Throughout the competition, she was supported by domestic fans with a very high level of interaction on many platforms (many viewers even said that she was still the champion for them), and at the same time made a good impression on her Asian friends.
