In the earliest match of the 36th round of the Premier League, Chelsea and Liverpool drew 1-1. This match, touted as a "big clash" in English football, disappointed fans with its lower-than-expected quality of play.
With this result, Liverpool have 59 points, temporarily placing them fourth in the league table. Coach Arne Slot's team still needs one more win to secure a place in the Champions League.
Meanwhile, Chelsea are in ninth place with 49 points and have no chance of breaking into the top five (the group that qualifies for the Champions League).
In theory, the Premier League could have six teams in the Champions League next season. That would be if Aston Villa won the Europa League and finished fifth in the Premier League.
Having won the Europa League, Aston Villa automatically qualify for the Champions League.
But if they finish 5th in the Premier League, the Champions League spot will be transferred to the team in 6th place. This means that 6th place in the Premier League would still qualify for the Champions League if Aston Villa won the Champions League and finished 5th.
Therefore, Chelsea and other teams still have hope of reaching the highest level of European football if they finish 6th. However, things are very precarious for The Blues right now as they are behind 6th-placed Bournemouth (who beat Fulham 1-0 this round).
Besides Bournemouth and Chelsea, Brighton (currently 7th with 53 points, having beaten Wolves 3-0 this round) and Brentford (currently 8th with 51 points) are also aiming for 6th place. However, their efforts to secure 6th place and a Champions League spot could be in vain.
This is because, due to Liverpool's failure to beat Chelsea, they are now only one point ahead of Aston Villa (ranked 5th). If Aston Villa win against Burnley this round, they will overtake Liverpool to take 4th place. If Aston Villa finish the season in the top 4, then only 5 teams in the Premier League will qualify for the Champions League.
