(GLO) - Perhaps all of us have participated in heated debates with others at least once. In such debates, each person tries their best to defend their opinion, and no one gives in to the other.

The reason arguments often arise in life is because each person has a distinctly personal perspective. A personal perspective is how we think about and evaluate a problem, a person, or an event from our own point of view. Because personal perspectives are subjective, they cannot be definitively right or wrong. Depending on the context of the conversation, we can assess whether someone's personal perspective is appropriate or inappropriate. Personal perspectives are part of our way of thinking and mindset, so some people, stemming from their own subjective thinking patterns, develop very extreme views, even becoming prejudices.

When discussing prejudice, there are many different interpretations from the perspective of sociologists. However, one common point is that prejudice is related to unfavorable ways of thinking and opinions. These are subjective judgments about an individual or group of people based on gender, occupation, social relationships, age, religion, race, language, nationality, physical appearance, or other personal characteristics.

According to the Vietnamese dictionary edited by Hoang Phe, "Prejudice is a pre-existing personal opinion that is difficult to change." Looking back in time, we can see many prejudices that have existed for long periods, especially in feudal societies. These include the ideology of valuing men over women, class discrimination, and prejudices about marital relationships…

It's hard to accept that in the age of Industry 4.0, there are still patriarchal men who impose centuries-old ideas on family life. They believe that all household chores, from childbirth and childcare to caring for parents, cooking, and laundry, are women's responsibilities, while women still have to work to support the family. Meanwhile, men, outside of work hours, can freely play sports , socialize with friends, or, even when they come home, lie around scrolling on their phones or watching TV while waiting for dinner. More and more women are seeking psychological support from marriage and family counseling centers. While we hear beautiful things about gender equality and women's rights every day, whether these age-old gender stereotypes have truly been eradicated remains a question that needs further discussion.

For example, it took a long time for society to gain a more thorough understanding of the LGBT community—the community of people with unique gender identities (an acronym for lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender). Previously, when parents saw a child with gender identity issues, they would almost immediately forbid their children from interacting with them. In the eyes of many, LGBT people were "sick," and many parents felt ashamed if they happened to have such a child. But then, as society developed and through various information channels, people began to have different perspectives.

On August 3, 2022, the Ministry of Health issued Official Letter No. 4132/BYT-PC, affirming that "homosexuality is not a disease and does not need treatment." Thanks to this, prejudices against people with gender identity issues may have become much less severe.

Each person is an individual. The old saying, "nine people, ten opinions," speaks to the unique perspective of each individual. In any society, there are people with very progressive ideas, hundreds of years ahead of their time. Alongside them are those who feel like they are always holding history back because of their outdated and backward views. Of course, one cannot impose one person's thinking on another's life because thinking is like a well-worn path; people keep following the path they've already explored and rarely seek a new direction. Some beliefs have existed for a very long time and become social prejudices. Whether or not these prejudices can be changed depends entirely on each individual's thinking. Therefore, don't let outdated beliefs cause you to miss out on the good things that await you in the future.
