Over the past month, in Van Ho district, the hot and dry weather has significantly affected agricultural production and the lives of local people. Van Ho district is focusing on directing specialized agencies to effectively exploit and operate irrigation works, ensuring water regulation to serve local production needs.

Van Ho district is exploiting and operating 135 irrigation works in 14 communes, serving production for nearly 2,130 hectares of agricultural production and more than 42 hectares of aquaculture. Mr. Thai Ba Sinh, Head of the district's Department of Agriculture and Rural Development, said: Since February 2024, the Department has advised the district People's Committee to issue a plan to implement solutions to cope with drought and water shortage in the spring crop. Focus on directing the People's Committees of communes to mobilize people and grassroots irrigation teams to organize dredging of water channels, repair and reinforce the dam system; strengthen management, exploitation and protection of irrigation works.
Implementing the 2024 dry season irrigation movement, since the beginning of the year, people in communes in Van Ho district have performed over 5,900 working days, clearing and dredging 114 km of canals, coordinating with Son La Irrigation Works Management and Exploitation One Member Co., Ltd., Van Ho Branch to repair 92 irrigation works with a total cost of over 833 million VND.
Mr. Bui Van Que, Deputy Director of the branch, said: Currently, in the district, there are nearly 40 hectares of spring rice lacking water. Regarding immediate solutions, the branch has directed professional staff to guide people to apply the method of rotating irrigation to save water; coordinate with the district's professional department to recommend people to change the appropriate crop structure from rice to dry crops, short-term crops such as: corn, beans, vegetables of all kinds... At the same time, propose to add pumps to support water supply to ensure production; regularly coordinate with 99 grassroots irrigation teams in the area to check the current status, assess the water supply capacity of irrigation works, and areas that are likely to be affected by drought.
Chieng Khoa commune is currently exploiting and operating 10 irrigation works including 7 grade IV solid dams, 3 temporary sluices with 14 km of canals, providing irrigation water for production on 241 hectares of agricultural land. Mr. Vi Van Huy, Chairman of Chieng Khoa commune People's Committee, said: The commune has directed the villages to step up propaganda and mobilize people to protect and make good use of irrigation works in the area; directed 10 grassroots irrigation teams to regularly inspect the current status of the works, coordinate with specialized agencies to promptly handle incidents and handle administrative violations in the field of irrigation.
Forecasting that hot and dry weather will continue in the coming time, Van Ho district focuses resources on implementing drought prevention solutions, strengthening the management of irrigation works in the area; deploying investment in construction, repair and upgrading of approved irrigation projects and works according to plan.
