Fundamental solutions for economic development
As one of the eight largest medicinal herb regions in the country, with more than 500 thousand hectares of natural forest, Quang Nam is also the locality with the largest area of primary forest in the Central Highlands region. Determining the development of medicinal herbs as a fundamental solution to develop the economy of ethnic minority and mountainous areas, in recent years, Quang Nam province has focused on promoting the development of medicinal herbs under the forest canopy, especially key plants such as Ngoc Linh ginseng, Codonopsis pilosula, Morinda officinalis... in mountainous districts.
In the decision approving the Planning of Quang Nam province for the period 2021 - 2030, with a vision to 2050, the goal is set for Quang Nam province to become a representative medicinal herb region of the Central - Central Highlands region. Mr. Le Van Dung, Chairman of Quang Nam Provincial People's Committee
Typically, in the border district of Tay Giang, since 2003, this locality has planned, arranged, and allocated planting areas and has many mechanisms and policies for developing medicinal plants. Accordingly, the government encourages ethnic minorities to take advantage of forest and hill land to plant and develop hundreds of hectares of medicinal plants such as: Ba kich, Dang sam, Sa nhan...
“In recent times, thanks to the Ba Kich tree, local people have had many opportunities to change their lives. Ba Kich is a very easy-to-grow and easy-to-care-for plant. The time from planting to caring for is not very long, only 3 years, and the yield is high. The important thing is to develop Ba Kich into a key plant to help local people escape poverty,” said village elder Bhríu Pố, A Rơh village, Lang commune, Tay Giang district.
According to Mr. Tran Cong Ta, Head of the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development of Tay Giang district: “In recent times, the district has flexibly integrated capital sources from three national target programs, focusing on the National Target Program 1719 to develop medicinal plants. At the same time, promoting the development of raw material areas through projects to support production development.
In addition, we promote and develop cooperatives to participate in the medicinal herbs development chain, both creating products and building brands for the products. After being recognized as OCOP products, the products are regularly improved and upgraded.
“Tay Giang district currently has a policy to support establishments producing medicinal products to invest in production lines and build brands; strive to bring endemic medicinal products from Ba Kich, Dang Sam and local highland specialties to meet the standards of the One Commune One Product (OCOP) Program,” said Mr. Tran Cong Ta.
Striving to become the medicinal center of the Central Highlands region
Along with Tay Giang, from the resources of Project 3, National Target Program 1719, mountainous districts in Quang Nam province have effectively implemented the content of "Developing sustainable agricultural and forestry production, promoting the potential and strengths of regions to produce goods according to the value chain".
Accordingly, the local government directly supports households to develop production in groups and assigns one household to be the focal point. The representative of the group will organize production, and other households in the group will participate. This helps the group use capital effectively, bring stable income, enhance responsibility in linking production development, and gradually form a large-scale medicinal plant production chain.
Thanks to the accelerated implementation of support contents under Project 3, National Target Program 1719, the localities in ethnic minority and mountainous areas of Quang Nam province have more resources to develop production according to the value chain, and areas for growing precious medicinal herbs. From there, it strongly promotes business start-ups, startups and investment attraction in ethnic minority and mountainous areas. In many localities, production, processing, trading enterprises and cooperatives participating in the value chain have up to 70% of the workforce being ethnic minorities.
Mr. Tran Duy Dung, Chairman of Nam Tra My District People's Committee, said: Implementing the National Target Program 1719, the locality has been promoting support for production and cooperative groups. In the near future, the district will replicate good models in developing medicinal plants so that households can link production, participate together, connect with each other, help each other develop the economy, escape poverty and get rich.
With its natural advantages and favors, Quang Nam province has great potential to form a large-scale medicinal plant production chain. In the planning of Quang Nam province for the period 2021 - 2030, with a vision to 2050, the goal is to make Quang Nam a medicinal plant center of the Central Highlands region.
According to Mr. Le Van Dung, Chairman of Quang Nam Provincial People's Committee, the province is currently focusing on developing a large-scale medicinal herb production chain, becoming the main production industry for mountainous people in particular and Quang Nam people in general.
“In the decision approving the Quang Nam Provincial Planning for the period 2021 - 2030, with a vision to 2050, the goal is set for Quang Nam province to become a representative medicinal herb region for the Central - Central Highlands region. This is a very good plan for Quang Nam. From this plan, the province is coordinating with central ministries and branches to develop a project to develop Quang Nam medicinal herbs to become a major medicinal herb center of the Central - Central Highlands region,” said Mr. Le Van Dung.
