Quang Ngai is clearing irrigation canals to cope with drought.

The impact of climate change is causing increasingly hot weather, creating many difficulties for agricultural production. However, thanks to the synchronized investment in irrigation systems and appropriate technical solutions, the western communes of Quang Ngai province have proactively responded and significantly reduced the damage caused by drought. A prime example is the coffee garden of Mr. Cao Van Luan's family in Tan Canh 3 village, Dak To commune, which continues to thrive with a high fruit setting rate after four irrigation cycles during the dry season.

Mr. Luan shared that although the prolonged heatwave this year necessitated an additional irrigation cycle, increasing production costs, thanks to the abundant water supply from the Dak Ro Ngat dam, invested in by the State, the farmers in the production group are completely comfortable with irrigation water, ensuring that their crops are not affected.

Not only industrial crops, but also many rice paddies have been ensured water supply for production during the dry season. Thanks to the flexible application of appropriate measures such as water-saving irrigation and zoned irrigation, about 30 hectares of winter-spring rice in Dak Ha commune have been harvested with stable yields, and people are now actively preparing for the new season.

According to Mr. Trinh Van Suong, a resident of Dak La 1 village, Dak Ha commune, the locality applies a proactive irrigation method based on specific crop cycles in each area instead of simultaneous irrigation; at the same time, the irrigation team appointed by the village always closely monitors and regulates the water supply to ensure good service for the next crop season.

With tens of thousands of hectares of industrial crops such as coffee, pepper, fruit trees, and vegetables, agriculture plays a leading role in the economy of the western communes of Quang Ngai province; therefore, proactive drought response is always a top priority.

According to Mr. Truong Van Khanh, Head of the Economic Department of the People's Committee of Dak To commune, the government has proactively encouraged the conversion of areas with insufficient water supply to crops that require less water in order to avoid losses.

Meanwhile, Ms. Pham Thi Diep, Vice Chairman of the People's Committee of Dak Ha commune, added that right from the beginning of the dry season, the commune has coordinated with the provincial irrigation management board to review the canal system, reservoirs, and areas at risk of water shortage to develop appropriate water regulation plans, helping to minimize damage to crops during this year's hot season.
