In the days leading up to the Lunar New Year of the Year of the Horse, Tu Lien village (Hong Ha ward, Hanoi ), a famous kumquat tree capital, is bustling with activity, welcoming numerous visitors from all over to visit and shop. Besides the familiar traditional kumquat trees, in recent years, kumquat trees carved from driftwood have become a unique and unusual product, quickly attracting the attention of bonsai enthusiasts with their impressive shapes, profound feng shui significance, and relatively high prices.

According to kumquat garden owners in Tu Lien, driftwood kumquat trees are an elaborate combination of ornamental kumquat trees and carefully selected natural driftwood roots and trunks. These rough, rustic pieces of wood, shaped into dragon-phoenix, waterfall, or horizontal forms, exude an ancient charm and are skillfully combined with the sturdy trunk of a kumquat tree, bearing abundant, round, golden-yellow fruit and glossy green leaves. The contrast between the aged, dry appearance of the driftwood and the vibrant life of the kumquat tree creates a harmonious and highly artistic overall effect.

Speaking to a reporter from the Industry and Trade Newspaper, Ms. Ngo Thu Trang, owner of the Xuan Loc - Tu Lien kumquat garden, said that it takes 5-7 years to complete a kumquat tree made from driftwood. After collection, the driftwood is treated to prevent termites and mold, then shaped to suit the overall design. The process of grafting kumquats onto the wood requires high skill to ensure stable growth, even sprouting of new leaves at the top, and ripe, golden fruit just in time for Tet (Lunar New Year).

"The significance of kumquat trees carved from driftwood lies in the enduring nature of time permeating each grain of wood, combined with the vitality and flourishing growth of the kumquat tree, symbolizing good fortune, prosperity, and sustainability," said the owner of the Xuan Loc - Tu Lien kumquat garden.

According to kumquat growers, the meticulous effort, technique, and uniqueness of each piece are the reasons why driftwood kumquat trees are much more expensive than traditional kumquat trees. Trees with beautiful shapes, large wood, and evenly sized fruits are often offered for sale at around 50-60 million VND, or even higher for exceptional pieces.

The market for kumquat trees grown on driftwood is primarily geared towards businesses, hotels, restaurants, or families with spacious homes who appreciate high-end ornamental plants. Although it caters to a niche market, according to kumquat growers in Tu Lien, this product line is contributing to elevating the value of ornamental kumquat trees; opening up new avenues and increasing income for growers every Tet (Lunar New Year) season.
