Brazilian midfielder Rafinha Alcântara announced his retirement via his personal social media account on December 22nd. This decision comes after more than a year without professional football, since leaving Qatari club Al-Arabi in the summer of 2024.
Rafinha rose through the ranks of the renowned La Masia academy and was once considered one of Barcelona's most promising and technically gifted midfielders. The peak of his career came in the 2014/15 season, when Barcelona, under coach Luis Enrique, won the historic treble of La Liga, the Copa del Rey, and the Champions League. Although not a key player, Rafinha was still an integral part of that deep and highly competitive team.
However, his time at Camp Nou also marked a turning point in the 1993-born midfielder's career. Serious injuries, particularly anterior cruciate ligament and meniscus damage, caused him to almost disappear from the pitch between 2017 and 2019. In total, Rafinha was sidelined for nearly 500 days, losing his momentum and his place in the Barcelona squad.
After several loan spells, including stints with Celta Vigo and Inter Milan, Rafinha left Barcelona permanently in 2020 to join Paris Saint-Germain. At PSG, he made 39 appearances over more than a season but failed to find long-term stability before returning to La Liga to play for Real Sociedad.
In the final years of his career, Rafinha chose to leave Europe and play in Qatar, ending his football journey with Al-Arabi Doha.
According to statistics, Rafinha retired with 386 appearances, 55 goals, and 46 assists. He boasts an impressive collection of titles, most notably the Champions League, 3 La Liga titles, 3 Copa del Rey titles, Ligue 1, and the FIFA Club World Cup. A glorious career, but also one filled with regret for a talent once expected to go much further.
