Sterling has become a free agent. |
In a brief 60-word statement, the Stamford Bridge club confirmed that both sides had reached an agreement to terminate the contract by mutual consent, thus making Sterling a free agent just before the January transfer window closed.
"We thank Raheem for his contributions during his time at Chelsea and wish him all the best in the next stage of his career," read a statement released by Chelsea in the early hours of January 29.
At 31, Sterling left Chelsea with no further appearances for the club from May 2024, despite remaining among the club's highest-paid players with an estimated salary of around £325,000 per week. If he had stayed until the end of his contract in summer 2027, Chelsea could have had to pay up to £25 million in wages to the English star.
Sterling joined Chelsea from Manchester City in the summer of 2022 for a fee of £47.5 million, becoming the first signing under the new owners, at a time when Todd Boehly also served as interim Director of Sport . He made a total of 81 appearances in all competitions for "The Blues" before spending the 2024/25 season on loan at Arsenal.
After returning to Chelsea last summer, Sterling no longer trains with the first team. Despite receiving interest from Fulham, Napoli, and several other clubs, the winger is not keen on another loan move. Instead, he prefers a long-term contract that offers stability and a fresh start.
Sterling is now a free agent and can negotiate with any club.
