The former Atletico Madrid player joined Al-Hilal in the winter of 2024 for €23 million, but found himself with an excess of foreign players. According to regulations, each club in the Saudi Pro League is only allowed to register 10 foreign players, with at least two under the age of 21. After adding Darwin Nunez and Theo Hernandez, coach Simone Inzaghi had 13 foreign players at his disposal, forcing the club to remove Lodi from the squad.
Refusing to accept having his career frozen, Lodi wrote on social media: "I have consulted with my legal team and have been assured that no one can take away my right to practice my profession."
Al-Hilal immediately responded by stating that he would “take legal action” against the 27-year-old player.
While waiting, Lodi returned to Brazil and hinted at finding a new club. At his prime and as a free agent, the Brazilian left-back could be an attractive option for many European and South American clubs looking to strengthen their squad.
