Parents of Co Nhue 2A Primary School (Bac Tu Liem District, Hanoi) received a notice at 6:40 a.m. from the homeroom teacher: "Due to the cold weather, the temperature in Hanoi this morning is below 10 degrees Celsius, so students are off school according to regulations. We respectfully request that parents keep warm, take good care of their children's health and keep them safe while they are at home. The school will notify you when they return to school."

Parents whose children study at other primary schools such as Be Van Dan (Dong Da District), T.TVan Dien (Thanh Tri District)... also received similar notices.

Parents of Co Nhue 2A Primary School (Bac Tu Liem District) received notice for students to stay home from school this morning.

Many young families in Hanoi with children in preschool and primary school have had to come up with a plan since last weekend if their children stay home from school to avoid the cold, then who will take care of them while their parents go to work; there are jobs that allow them to flexibly ask permission from their agency to work from home, but most of them have to pick up grandparents from the countryside to look after them or assign them to take leave...

Understanding this difficulty of parents, some schools still maintain their doors open to welcome students. Kim Giang Primary School (Hoang Mai District) announced that the morning class will be delayed to 8:30 and end at 11:30 because students will not have recess to ensure they stay warm in class. If parents let their children stay home from school due to the cold, they need to notify the homeroom teacher before 7:50 so that the school kitchen can reduce their children's lunch.

Chuc Dong High School (Chuong My District) has informed all students about adjusting the morning school start time to 8:20 a.m., 50 minutes later than the usual schedule due to the cold weather.

Thanh Xuan Trung Primary School (Thanh Xuan District) also moved the school hours 20 minutes later than the old schedule. This, according to the school, helps parents feel less anxious or have to struggle to take their children to school early in the morning.

Many schools in Ba Dinh District have carefully planned to protect students from the cold.

Ms. Pham Thi Le Hang, Head of the Department of Education and Training of Ha Dong District, said that she has issued a document instructing schools to implement synchronous solutions to prevent cold for students. Schools notify parents to proactively let their children stay home if the weather is below 10 degrees Celsius for preschool and primary schools.

However, Ms. Hang also said that in cases where some families do not have the conditions to look after their children, even if the temperature is below 10 degrees Celsius, schools are always open to welcome students to create favorable conditions for parents to go to work. After that, depending on the number of students absent, there will be a plan to make up for their knowledge. For those students who are late to school due to weather reasons during these days, the school will flexibly welcome them back to class."

In non-public schools, this flexibility is more obvious. Most schools announce that they will still welcome students to school and have plans to ensure their health and prevent cold for students if parents need to send their children to school.

Hanoi's weather drops below 10 degrees Celsius, many schools let students stay home

Previously, the Hanoi Department of Education and Training issued a document requesting educational institutions in the area to maintain monitoring of information on outdoor temperatures in Hanoi during days of severe cold, which is broadcast in the weather forecast bulletin in the Good Morning program on VTV1 channel, Vietnam Television and the Hanoi Morning program on H1 channel, Hanoi Radio and Television at 6:00 a.m. every day.

Based on this information, school principals in the city proactively adjust school hours or allow students to take time off. Accordingly, preschool and primary school students will be off when the outdoor temperature is below 10 degrees Celsius; secondary school students will be off when the outdoor temperature is below 7 degrees Celsius.

During cold days, depending on local weather conditions, schools can adjust school hours so that students do not have to arrive too early. In case students arrive late due to weather, schools need to be flexible in resolving the issue so that students can enter school.

The Hanoi Department of Education and Training has advised schools not to organize outdoor activities for students on very cold days. Schools should coordinate with parents to remind students to wear warm clothes. Schools do not require students to wear uniforms on cold days; at the same time, they should increase inspection and timely repair of doors in classrooms, function rooms, boarding rooms, dining rooms, etc. to ensure that they are windproof, have enough light and keep students warm.
