A solid-state capacitive Action Button switch was rumored for the iPhone 15 Pro, but Apple scrapped the plan at the last minute and moved the improvement to next year's iPhone 16 models.
The leak was revealed by Macrumors , a reliable source whose previous leaks about the iPhone 15 series have been accurate. The source emphasized that this is pre-production information and Apple's plans may change.
Accordingly, the iPhone 16, iPhone 16 Plus, iPhone 16 Pro, and iPhone 16 Pro Max will all have an Action button instead of a physical mute switch. Currently, only the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max use the Action button. The iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus still use the traditional mute switch.
The leaker also adds that Apple plans to upgrade the Action button to be more powerful and make it work similarly to the Touch ID Home button on older iPhone models or the Trackpad on recently produced MacBooks.
The new Action button will be able to detect changes in pressure, thanks to a new force sensor. In addition, it may be added with the function of unlocking the screen. Currently, the Action button has functions such as turning on or off silent mode, turning on the camera, recording voice...
Apple has also reportedly been testing different sizes for the Action button. In pre-production testing, some iPhone 16 models are said to include a larger Action button than the iPhone 15 Pro, roughly the size of a volume rocker.
