Before the trip to Al-Riyadh's stadium, Cristiano Ronaldo decided to "go on strike" to protest against the Public Investment Fund (PIF). Ronaldo argued that the PIF, which manages both Al Nassr and Al Hilal, treats the two teams differently.
Specifically, PIF allowed Al Hilal to freely spend money recruiting new stars, while Al Nassr was unable to secure quality signings.
Ronaldo's strike drew particular attention to the Al Nassr vs. Al-Riyadh match. Although the Portuguese superstar was absent, Al Nassr still secured all three points.
Sadio Mane (40th minute) scored the only goal to secure the victory for Al Nassr. This was Al Nassr's fifth consecutive win in the Saudi Pro League, allowing them to closely pursue Al Hilal in the standings.
After 19 rounds, Al Hilal has 47 points, temporarily leading the standings, and is only 1 point ahead of Al Nassr (in round 19, Al Hilal was held to a 0-0 draw by Al Ahli). With their current points total, Al Nassr has a strong chance of dethroning Al Hilal to win the Saudi Pro League championship.
