Roy Keane says Arsenal will pay the price for 'eating early'

Former MU captain Roy Keane questioned why Arsenal easily accepted to maintain their 1-0 advantage against MU in the first round of the 2025/26 Premier League on the evening of August 17.

Roy Keane criticizes Arsenal for not daring to take risks

A Riccardo Calafiori goal was enough to secure the three points for the Gunners, but Keane warned that this would not always be the case, with Arsenal dropping points from a position of advantage on several occasions last season - a factor that cost them dearly in the title race.

In the final eight games of the season, Mikel Arteta's side took the lead seven times but won just three, drawing with Everton, Brentford, Crystal Palace and Bournemouth after taking the lead.

Keane commented on Sky Sports : “You wonder why Arsenal are still missing something - it's because they're still happy to sit back when they're 1-0 up. Then you think, is that why they drew so many games last season?"

The figure Keane referred to was Arsenal's 14 draws last season - a number that left them 10 points behind Liverpool in the standings, despite the two teams losing an equal number of games.

The former MU captain then gave an example: “Compare with Man City and Liverpool. They always find a way to score a second, a third goal. Even on a bad day, they can still score two or three goals.”

In the opening round of this season, both Liverpool and Man City scored 4 goals. However, Liverpool also had to draw 2-2 with Bournemouth after leading 2-0, before exploding to win.

Also in the commentary, former Manchester City defender Micah Richards was impressed with Arsenal's defensive resilience. However, he also said that if the team had a more aggressive attacking mindset, they would not have had to defend so tightly.

“What has kept Arsenal in the title race over the years is that when they sit deep and set up a low block, they are very difficult to break down. Add to that the ability to take advantage of set-pieces, they are a strong team. But I would just like to see them be a little braver,” said Richards.
