The Difference Between Purple, Red and Green Grapes

On the market, grapes are commonly sold in three main colors: purple, red and green.

The difference between grapes is not only in appearance but also in taste, texture and nutritional content.

Maddie Pasquariello, a nutritionist working in the US, said that grapes generally have quite similar nutritional composition, providing fiber, potassium and vitamin A.

However, different colors also mean slight differences in antioxidant content, giving each one its own value.

Nutritionally, the difference between the three types of grapes: green - red - purple is not too big.

Purple grapes

Purple grapes are considered the most flavorful and intense. Their characteristic purple color comes from anthocyanins, a polyphenol compound that both provides pigment and has anti-inflammatory properties.

Purple grapes are generally sweeter, thicker-skinned and more tender-fleshed than red and green grapes.

Red grapes

Red grapes are also rich in anthocyanins and have almost the same antioxidant value as green grapes.

In terms of taste, red grapes are considered to be slightly sweet, with a bit of sourness to create balance. The red grape flesh is crispy, the skin is thin and easy to eat, creating a sense of harmony.

Green grapes

Green grapes are pale green with a yellow tinge. Unlike red and purple grapes, green grapes do not contain anthocyanins but contain mainly flavonols, a compound that also has anti-inflammatory effects, protects the heart and nerves, and can help keep the liver healthy.

Green grapes are crunchy, fresh, and slightly sour, making them a popular choice for eating directly or in salads.

Which grapes are the healthiest?

Nutritionally, the differences between the three grapes aren't huge, says nutritionist Maddie Pasquariello.

Purple grapes have slightly more antioxidants, but this benefit is not significant for overall health when included in a balanced diet. The important thing is to stick to a regular grape habit, rather than choosing which variety is best.
