Recently, the Oncology Center - Phu Tho General Hospital received a very special case with a severely necrotic neck wound, an abscess with many maggots crawling around inside.
Patient D.CV (82 years old, in Dan Thuong commune, Phu Tho province) had a history of hypopharyngeal cancer and was hospitalized with a large ulcer in the right neck area spreading to the nape of the neck. At the ulcer site, there were many maggots and pus. The patient was weak and exhausted.

Through examination, doctors at the Oncology Surgery Department diagnosed that the patient's abscess along the right sternocleidomastoid muscle was necrotic, dirty pus, the necrosis ate deep into the tunnel up to the mastoid bone, in the necrosis there were many maggots crawling around, the soft tissue around the surgical wound was swollen and red.
The patient was indicated for surgery to remove necrotic tissue, clean and remove all maggots in the inflammation site, combined with antibiotic treatment, pain relief and nutritional intervention.

After surgery, the patient was stable, no fever, the incision was dry, closed well, and the granulation tissue was growing evenly. After the wound healed, the patient was transferred to the Palliative Care Department for further treatment.
BSCKI. Nguyen Tan Tao, Department of Oncology Surgery, said that this is an extremely rare case, because the abscess was left for a long time and was not properly cleaned and cared for, so it became severely necrotic.

Through this, BSCKI. Nguyen Tan Tao recommends that patients in general and cancer patients in particular, when detecting the disease, should go to the hospital for examination, early treatment and proper care instructions, to avoid the disease from becoming serious, causing difficulties in the treatment process.
In addition, if patients and their families discover any abnormalities during treatment, they should immediately notify the doctor for advice on the next treatment steps.
