Tet, the Lunar New Year, is a time for extended families to reunite, enjoy delicious meals, and share stories about their lives. While it's joyful to be together, Tet also brings more worry and busyness than ever before for many people. However, with the development of digital technology , digital transformation has become a tool to help families reduce the burden of Tet preparations.
Visiting her child studying in France just before Tet (Lunar New Year), Ms. Le Thi Huong ( from Yen Bai province ) was worried as her return home was only two days away. Between worrying about the upcoming flight and the constant fear of not having enough time to prepare for Tet, Ms. Huong looked visibly pensive.
Seeing this, her daughter, who is currently studying abroad, suggested, "Why don't you try ordering things online, Mom?" Ms. Huong had considered this option, but her family had always maintained the traditional custom of making banh chung (traditional Vietnamese rice cakes), gio (Vietnamese sausage), and cooking vermicelli soup during Tet (Vietnamese New Year) – dishes passed down from their ancestors for decades.
Therefore, she is still hesitant to make a decision because she is afraid that buying online won't guarantee quality. Moreover, the joy of wandering around the Tet market has been deeply ingrained in her family's life for a long time, and now she feels like something is missing if she doesn't go shopping for Tet herself.
"Nowadays, you can find anything online, and the quality is guaranteed too, Mom, just give it a try," Huong's daughter encouraged her again, then took her phone and installed some shopping apps, then handed it to her, saying, "Here, we have everything, Mom, just choose what you want and add it to your cart, then place your order..."
Seeing the wide variety of goods available online, some even beautifully packaged, Ms. Huong eagerly browsed through them. Shopping for Vietnamese Tet (Lunar New Year) from Europe, Ms. Huong spent half a day engrossed in her online shopping.
She discovered that in Vietnam, some supermarkets even accept orders for entire traditional New Year's Eve feasts, including beautifully presented boiled chicken that meets all standards and boasts vibrant colors. The sticky rice comes in a variety of types, is abundant and visually appealing, far more so than the sticky rice she makes herself. The fried spring rolls are golden brown; the pork sausage and ham are sliced and decorated beautifully. The supermarket also suggests additional items for her to choose from, such as drinks, ceremonial wine, incense, etc.
Furthermore, Ms. Huong ordered Tet supplies for all three days of the Lunar New Year, including candies, preserved fruits, nuts, red envelopes, and more – nothing was missing. She also ordered home decorations. What she appreciated most was that when ordering online, the shop always called to confirm the order in a kind and gentle voice. They even suggested many different options for her to choose from.
With just over a day left before her flight back home, Ms. Huong felt relieved to have shed the burden of preparing for Tet (Lunar New Year), and spent her remaining time happily visiting beautiful sights in France with her husband and daughter. This year, her daughter wouldn't be returning home for the traditional Tet holiday, so thanks to "digital transformation," she was able to cast aside her worries about Tet preparations and dedicate her time entirely to her daughter.
Returning home on the last day of the old year, Ms. Huong received all the goods she had bought from Europe. On the afternoon of the 30th of Tet (Lunar New Year's Eve), she even had time to stroll through the spring flower market with friends to buy the most beautiful peach blossoms. Never before had she felt Tet so peaceful.
In the days leading up to Tet (Lunar New Year), instead of going to the streets to shop, many people prefer shopping online because it saves time, avoids crowds, and prevents the hassle of carrying heavy bags, especially the risk of price gouging. To better meet customer demand during the peak Tet season, businesses have significantly increased the variety of goods available on platforms such as TikTok, Facebook, and Zalo.
With just a few clicks from the comfort of their own home, customers can easily select any product they are interested in, with full information about style, size, material, and more. Consumers can also easily compare prices across various websites and take advantage of any promotions, ensuring they are buying something truly useful.
In addition, safe and fast home delivery services help customers save a significant amount of valuable time. Diverse payment methods are being adopted by many online shopping websites to facilitate shopping services. Consumers can pay cash directly upon receiving their goods without worrying about product quality.
Vietnam currently has nearly 70 million smartphone users, placing it among the top 10 countries with the highest smartphone usage rates in the world . With their smartphones, every citizen, regardless of location or whether they live in urban or rural areas, has been, is, and will continue to participate in digital transformation in their own way. In particular, many people have reduced the pressure of Tet (Lunar New Year) shopping thanks to digital transformation.
