Online shopping is bustling during Tet (Lunar New Year).

Increased demand

Busy with work at the end of the year, many people have started buying household items, sweets, and clothes for their families through online shopping. Unlike previous years, instead of struggling to carry many items, Ms. Dang Thanh Hoa (residing in Thuan Phuoc ward, Hai Chau district) can shop from home using online shopping.

Ms. Thanh Hoa shared that, as an office worker, her work schedule is busy until close to Tet (Lunar New Year), leaving her with little free time to go out shopping, so online shopping is her best option.

“Every year, in the days leading up to Tet (Lunar New Year), I had to rush to the market or supermarket after work to shop, jostling and struggling to carry my purchases, which caused me a lot of difficulties. Now, online shopping has solved those problems for me. Now, I can simply shop for the necessary items for my family with a few quick and easy steps while I'm at home,” said Ms. Hoa.

With young children, traveling for shopping is quite inconvenient. Ms. Nguyen Thi Hoai Thuong's family (Man Thai ward, Son Tra district) was initially unfamiliar with online shopping, but now they are proficient in "placing orders online and hunting for discount codes on live streams".

Ms. Thuong said: “Even before giving birth, I was already getting used to online shopping, researching reputable shops on e-commerce platforms to shop with peace of mind. Now, with Tet (Lunar New Year) approaching, items like diapers, toys, milk, and baby food are all readily available on e-commerce platforms, giving me many choices of safe products for my little one. If you know how to find sales, the prices can even be much cheaper than in physical stores.”

Having worked as a delivery driver for three years, Tran Thanh Sang (Hoa Minh ward, Lien Chieu district) is busier in the days leading up to Tet (Lunar New Year) to ensure timely deliveries for customers. “I try to work diligently in the days before Tet to earn extra income to visit my family during the holiday. During these days, orders increase four to five times, so I try to work continuously to deliver to customers. In recent years, the volume of orders during Tet has increased significantly; buyers are also gradually becoming more fond of and trusting online shopping.”

Safe online shopping

With just a click, customers can easily order the products they need. However, there are also many unfortunate stories of "ordering one thing and receiving something completely different," prompting consumers to be more cautious.

Mr. Nguyen Quoc Cuong (Thach Thang ward, Hai Chau district) said: “The other day I ordered some confectionery and jam products to try in preparation for Tet. The jams advertised on Facebook looked very appealing, but when I received the order, the products were different from the pictures and unusable because they were past their expiration date. I tried contacting the seller but received no response.”

Although online shopping is growing rapidly, buyers need to be aware of important points to ensure a safe shopping experience.

Sharing her experience shopping on online marketplaces, Ms. Nguyen Thi Thao (residing in Hoa Hiep Nam ward, Lien Chieu district) said: “When buying goods, I pay close attention to the policies on product inspection, returns, and warranty; especially, I also care about the number of products sold and the reviews from buyers through star ratings, comments, and images… to avoid unwanted situations.”

The e-commerce market in Vietnam is currently in a period of rapid development with very high annual growth rates. Along with this, e-commerce activities in Da Nang City are experiencing strong growth. Especially during the Lunar New Year holiday, consumer demand increases significantly, and online shopping is a popular choice. Besides the convenience offered by online shopping, ensuring consumer rights in online shopping is extremely important.

According to Mr. Pham Ngoc Son, Director of the City's Market Management Department, in 2023, the Department implemented the "Combating Counterfeit Goods and Protecting Consumers in E-commerce until 2025" project to enhance the effectiveness and efficiency of combating counterfeit goods and protecting consumer rights in e-commerce activities. Simultaneously, it contributes to promoting sustainable e-commerce development and protecting the legitimate rights and interests of businesses and consumers.

Furthermore, the City Market Management Department announced that, in order to protect consumer rights during the upcoming Lunar New Year of the Year of the Dragon 2024, the Department will continue to strengthen its efforts to combat, promptly prevent, and thoroughly handle acts of exploiting e-commerce activities to trade smuggled goods, prohibited goods, counterfeit goods, substandard goods, goods infringing on intellectual property rights, and other fraudulent activities in e-commerce.
