Pregnant women with Rh(-) blood type are rare, with a rate of about 4-7/10,000. When a woman with Rh(-) blood type has a husband with Rh(+) blood type, the child born will have a high rate of having Rh(+) blood type. During the first pregnancy, if somehow the blood (red blood cells) of the fetus comes into contact with the mother's blood, it will stimulate the mother's body to produce antibodies against the fetus's Rh(+) red blood cells. These antibodies exist in the mother's blood for life and cross the placenta, so there is a high risk of causing serious consequences in subsequent pregnancies.

Obstetrician at Hoan My Binh Phuoc Hospital guides mothers on how to take care of their babies after giving birth

Pregnant woman NTQN, 27 years old, discovered that she had a rare blood type Rh(-) during a prenatal check-up at Hoan My Binh Phuoc Hospital. Realizing the potential risks for pregnant women with rare blood types, Dr. CK1 Thai Minh Trung, Director of Clinical Administration of the hospital, proactively mobilized blood of the same Rh(-) type for the patient in case she needed a blood transfusion after giving birth. In addition, doctors have also prepared preventive medicine in case the child has the same blood type (Rh+) as the father, the mother must be injected with Anti-D within the first 72 hours after birth to limit the mother's antibody response when giving birth.

When the mother was admitted to the hospital, through the examination, the doctors assessed the mother's condition as having low amniotic fluid, making it difficult to give birth normally, so they ordered a cesarean section and an Anti-D injection immediately after birth. With careful preparation in advance, the obstetricians at Hoan My Binh Phuoc Hospital successfully performed the cesarean section. The 2.8kg baby girl was born to the joy of the whole family. After birth, both mother and baby were monitored daily. Currently, both mother and baby are stable.

What should a mother with Rh(-) blood type pay attention to when pregnant for the second time?

Pregnant women with Rh(-) blood type need to be closely and properly monitored during pregnancy to ensure the safety of both mother and baby. Doctors at Hoan My Binh Phuoc Hospital recommend that pregnant women choose a reputable place for prenatal check-ups to promptly detect abnormalities and prepare well for delivery.
