Artistic creation must be linked to identity.

National identity and modern artistic language are core elements in guiding the development of literature and art in the new era.

On December 3rd, the Union of Literature and Arts Associations of Ho Chi Minh City organized a scientific seminar with the theme: "Ho Chi Minh City artists and writers promote creativity in implementing Conclusion No. 84-KL/TW dated June 21, 2024 of the Politburo , and continuing to implement Resolution No. 23-NQ/TW of the 10th Politburo on 'Continuing to build and develop literature and arts in the new era'".

A powerful flow of creativity

At the seminar, architect Nguyen Truong Luu, Chairman of the Union of Arts and Culture Associations of Ho Chi Minh City, emphasized that the city's artists and writers are striving to maximize the spirit of innovation and creativity in implementing Conclusion No. 84-KL/TW dated June 21, 2024, of the Politburo on the implementation of Resolution No. 23-NQ/TW (10th Congress) on "Continuing to build and develop arts and culture in the new era." This is an important guiding principle, orienting the city's artistic creation activities in the current period, while also inspiring the desire of artists and writers to contribute to the development of Vietnamese culture and people.

Architect Nguyen Truong Luu, Chairman of the Ho Chi Minh City Association of Literature and Arts, spoke at the seminar on the morning of December 3rd.

In a similar vein, many delegates also noted that Ho Chi Minh City is a land of powerful creative currents. Numerous works – from theater and film to fine arts and music – have made a profound impact in recent times, reflecting the spirit of creative freedom while remaining rooted in humanistic values.

Outstanding theatrical works such as "The Warrior," "Red Coral," "Aspiration for Peace," and "Comrade"; or in the field of cinema, films like "Underground Tunnels: The Sun in the Darkness" and "Southern Forest Land"... are evidence of the blending of national identity and modern artistic language, a core element of cultural and artistic development in the new era.

Today, Ho Chi Minh City's creative space has expanded to include digital platforms, public art, creative festivals, and digital museum projects, demonstrating the strong adaptation of artists to the demands of the cultural industry and digital transformation.

Bringing the work to life.

One of the issues discussed in depth at the workshop was the role of professional associations in the new era.

Choreographer Le Nguyen Hieu, Standing Member of the Presidium of the Union of Arts and Culture Associations of Ho Chi Minh City, proposed key solutions to empower specialized associations; to preside over festivals, performances, and awards; to participate in policy critiques; and to proactively commission artistic works.

According to experts, it is necessary to quickly streamline the operational mechanism to operate under a project-based system and financial autonomy, thereby attracting young artists and independent creative groups. Simultaneously, emphasis should be placed on protecting copyright – the rights of artists; standardizing model contracts; providing legal support in the digital environment; and connecting artists with businesses and cultural investment funds… These proposals aim at a common goal: unleashing creative energy, transforming professional associations into centers for gathering, guiding, and evaluating – fulfilling the "core" function of culture and arts in the new context.

The workshop also highlighted four major challenges: the impact of commercialization on artistic value; the lack of long-term investment policies; the absence of an art investment fund; and the training of young generations not being closely linked to creative practice and the cultural industry. Based on this, proposed solutions included: establishing a Ho Chi Minh City Creative Fund; organizing creative workshops and strengthening art communication; and elevating professional associations into sustainable creative ecosystems.

Professor Nguyen Xuan Tien, Chairman of the Ho Chi Minh City Fine Arts Association, stated that the overarching goal of the associations is to bring artworks into everyday life. The Fine Arts Association has been advocating for expanding creative spaces, strengthening public-private partnerships, and moving towards financial self-sufficiency to reinvest in creative works, exhibitions, and community projects.

Mr. Vo Cong Phuoc, former Chief of the Office of the Union of Cultural and Artistic Associations of Ho Chi Minh City, suggested focusing on discovering young talents through maintaining field trips – an environment that nurtures creative inspiration. Ms. Nguyen Thi Minh Hue (Ho Chi Minh City Fine Arts Association) focused on the issue of AI (artificial intelligence) and cultural and artistic life. "AI, as a cognitive partner, opens up new aesthetic requirements for the digital age. We need to focus on aesthetic standards, creative ethics, and copyright, renewing Vietnamese heritage with a modern visual language," Ms. Minh Hue stated.

According to Ms. Hong Kim Ngoc, Head of the Culture and Arts Department of the Propaganda and Mass Mobilization Committee of the Ho Chi Minh City Party Committee, artistic creation must be sustainable, humane, and connected to identity. Artists and writers are not only creators but also creators of cultural values, contributing to raising the level of the spiritual life of society.
