Sao Mai Khanh Ly holds first music night after focusing on PhD studies
At 8pm on March 21, the mini show "Ly" by singer Nguyen Khanh Ly will take place at Hoang Cau (Hanoi). This is the first solo music night after 20 years of pursuing professional music for the 3rd prize winner of Sao Mai 2011 Khanh Ly, and also marks her determination to return to the performing stage with more vigor after a long period of silence due to focusing on her studies.
"The minishow is my gratitude to those I am grateful to. They are my teachers, family, friends, companions, and my beloved audience, my students," said the singer.

During the music night, Sao Mai Khanh Ly will perform a series of famous lyrical songs: As if in love (Duc Huy); What month is it now (Tu Cong Phung); Nightingale singing in the rain (Duong Thu); Ly (Vu Minh Vuong); Da Qua Xa Roi (Duong Truong Giang); Afraid of love (Hoang Nha); Last song (Ngo Thuy Mien). The female singer will also sing a duet with People's Artist Duc Long on the songs Mua he dep nhat (Duc Huy), Chuot ngo (Nhat Trung); and harmonize with Duong Truong Giang on Da Qua Xa Giai by the male musician...
Nguyen Khanh Ly is a singer who has been trained in classical Opera. The important music awards she has won in her career are also in the chamber music genre: Third Prize Sao Mai 2011, Second Prize Chamber Singing Competition - Musical Theater 2017... However, in the music night "Ly", the female singer and the guests brought the audience lyrical music.
Sharing about this, Sao Mai Khanh Ly said that after a long time working in the profession, singing many different genres of music, she realized that the majority of the audience still loves her singing lyrical songs. Her album Vol.2 "Mua la dua qua" with lyrical light music songs released in 2015 was loved by many people. Her teachers such as: People's Artist Ha Thuy, People's Artist Duc Long... also supported and highly appreciated Nguyen Khanh Ly when she converted to this genre of music. And Sao Mai Khanh Ly herself, when singing lyrical songs, she feels like she is most herself, can show her full potential as well as express and share with the audience her deep emotions and thoughts... Especially, when she is at an age where her voice and emotions are at a certain maturity, she wants to sing more simply, approaching the audience with the most sincere emotions with the desire to touch.
"I am embarrassed to sit in front of People's Artist Trung Kien"
Two decades on the music path, Nguyen Khanh Ly has left an impression on the audience with her soaring high voice, technical expertise but still full of emotion. Although loved by many people, in recent years, she has not appeared much on music stages. The reason is because she is busy with vocal training for students at the Vietnam National Academy of Music and especially focusing on getting a PhD with many difficulties and pressures.
After graduating with a Master's degree, Nguyen Khanh Ly continued to do research, defending her doctoral thesis in music under the guidance of People's Artist Trung Kien. But while her studies were still unfinished, People's Artist Trung Kien passed away in 2021, leaving her in deep shock.

Talking about People's Artist Trung Kien, Khanh Ly affirmed that this is the teacher who had the deepest influence on her. "He had a huge amount of knowledge about vocal music. Before him, I felt so small, so limited in knowledge, and sometimes I felt ashamed when facing him. When he passed away in 2021, I felt so lost, lost, and had lost my spiritual support. That was a very difficult time for me to face alone. Fortunately for me, after that, I was helped and guided by his life partner, Professor. People's Artist Tran Thu Ha, to continue completing my PhD thesis," the female singer shared.
Talking about the controversy about students not recognizing the efforts of teachers in the music industry in recent years, Khanh Ly said: "There are quite a few young singers with attitude towards senior artists, I have also encountered this in the process of teaching. I always think that young people are often impulsive, standing in the position of a tutor, I should be tolerant. When I was in school, I was also tolerant of teachers, because of these and other mistakes. Of course, tolerance does not mean indulgence, we have to explain to them to understand."
The 2011 Sao Mai Third Prize winner also shared that the difficulties in her research and study process had caused her to suffer from mental illness for a while. She was almost unable to work or sing well because she had to keep pushing herself... It was not until 2023, after completing her PhD thesis defense, that she thought about returning to the stage.
"Music is like a medicine that can soothe and heal people with mental illness. I have been mentally ill for a long time during my studies and research. Now, I want to sing and live true to my love for music. I think that an artist without a soul, without singing, without expressing what he is passionate about is like a tree without water, and will wither. I am performing this concert so that from now on I will be determined to return to music more clearly and strongly," the singer shared.
