On May 25, US President Donald Trump announced that he would postpone imposing a 50% tariff on the European Union until July 9, after a good phone call with European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, according to AFP news agency.

Previously, Mr. Trump threatened to impose strong tariffs from June 1, saying that negotiations with the EU regarding his previous tariffs "will go nowhere".

"She just called me and asked for an extension of the June 1 deadline and said she wanted to start serious negotiations," Mr. Trump told reporters before boarding Air Force One in Morristown, New Jersey.

“And I agreed to that,” he added.

Earlier, on social network X, Ms. Von der Leyen said she had a "good phone call" with President Trump, but "to reach a good agreement, we will need time until July 9".

"Europe is ready to move forward with negotiations quickly and decisively," the European Commission president stressed.

Brussels and Washington are in talks to avert a full-blown transatlantic trade war and have agreed to suspend tariff action on both sides until July.

But Mr Trump’s threat last week took tensions to a new level. On May 23, the US leader declared that he was “not looking for a deal” with the EU, reiterating his long-held view that the bloc was created to “take advantage” of the US.

The US leader threatened to impose tariffs of up to 50% on EU goods from June 1, complaining that the 27-member bloc was difficult to negotiate with and that the talks would yield no results.

On May 25, German Finance Minister Lars Klingbeil called for "serious negotiations" with Washington, saying he had spoken with his US counterpart Scott Bessent about the issue.

"We don't need any more provocations, we need serious negotiations. US tariffs are as dangerous for the US economy as they are for the German and European economies," Klingbeil warned.

Mr. Trump has imposed three tariffs on the bloc: 25% on steel, aluminum and cars, followed by a 20% reciprocal tariff on all imports (which has been suspended pending negotiations), and a basic tariff of 10% that remains in effect.

Although Mr Trump has met with several European leaders, Ms von der Leyen has yet to arrange a formal meeting with him. She has said she would only meet the US leader if there was a “concrete” trade package to negotiate.
