While many durian regions along Lam Dong have just finished harvesting and are budding and tending branches, here, the durian trees are preparing for the blooming season. This is where the durian season of the highlands begins early.
Mr. Nguyen Manh Hoa, a young farmer in Ha Tay village, Quoc Oai commune, Da Huoai district, is plucking flowers for his family's durian garden. Mr. Hoa said that his family's durian garden has begun to bloom, and needs to be plucked, and some flower clusters that are too thick or too small need to be plucked. He also informed that the durian will be in full bloom this week, and his family is about to actively pollinate the trees.
“Durian flowers bloom at night, so there are very few insects and bugs that pollinate the flowers. Farmers must proactively use tools to sweep the flowers, from one flower to another, to help the tree pollinate. Durian that is properly pollinated will produce round, beautiful fruit that meets export standards.”
Mr. Nguyen Manh Hoa is evaluating the blooming of durian flowers.
According to Mr. Hoa, the durian fruit takes 90 days from the time it is young to ripe for the Ri6 variety, and 120 days for the Monthon variety. And for his family, in April 2025, there will be ripe durian to supply to the market.
“We are very lucky that our land in Quoc Oai is located in a hot microclimate, so durian flowers bloom early and the fruit ripens quickly. If the main durian season is in July and August, then in April, Quoc Oai will have a bumper harvest,” said Mr. K'Tieu - Vice Chairman of the Farmers' Association of Quoc Oai commune.
Mr. K'Tieu provided information that Quoc Oai region has only developed durian in the last 8-10 years, not as long as many other durian regions in Da Huoai district. However, due to the climate and soil characteristics, Quoc Oai durian ripens very early, when most places do not have ripe durian.
“This is the strength of Quoc Oai durian. Because it ripens early, the price of durian is higher than the average price of the year. For example, in the 2024 durian crop, although the average price of the whole province is not too high, Quoc Oai farmers can still sell at the floor price of 70,000 VND/kg, traders come to cut in the garden,” Mr. K'Tieu assessed.
For the people of Quoc Oai, durian is a crop that is still in the process of being explored, finding the unique features of the early-fruiting durian region, Mr. Nguyen Ba Tien, father of Mr. Nguyen Manh Hoa, a good farmer, shared.
Mr. Tien is one of the farmers who apply high technology in durian cultivation, from pure planting, cutting the top, and horizontal branch attachment..., he applies all of these to his family's 6-year-old durian garden.
According to Mr. Tien, the tree requires a very high amount of water, especially during the flowering and fruit setting stages, which is also the harsh dry season. Therefore, when the tree flowers, farmers need to ensure regular watering, and daily watering during sunny weather. In addition, farmers need to pay attention to plant nutrients and disease prevention to achieve high yields. Currently, his family's durian garden has joined the growing area code, and the durian is cut and sold for early export.
Not only households with a tradition of growing durian, many farmers in Quoc Oai are starting to get acquainted with this difficult crop. Mrs. Ka Khao’s family in Da Nhar village, Quoc Oai commune also planted 130 durian trees. When converting the cashew garden to grow durian, the family was also very worried.
Ms. Ka Khao shared that durian trees require a huge investment cost, a long waiting time for fruit, and when it comes time to harvest, farmers are also worried about output and price. However, with the support of the commune, she and her family boldly invested.
Not only Mrs. Ka Khao's family, seeing Kinh farmers successfully growing durian, many indigenous farmers in Da Nhar village have planted durian. People are hopeful that the early harvest will help Quoc Oai durian maintain its price advantage in the future.
"To accompany farmers and ensure output for durian, Quoc Oai commune is building export growing area codes," said Mr. K'Tieu.
According to Mr. K'Tieu, Quoc Oai has 563 hectares of durian, including some newly planted durian areas. The commune has worked with purchasing enterprises and established 3 export growing area codes for 200 hectares. And in the 2025 crop year, Quoc Oai is continuing to expand the durian area participating in the growing area codes.
“Early ripening durian is a huge advantage. However, we do not only rely on natural advantages. We always remind and encourage farmers to follow the correct cultivation techniques as prescribed by our partners and cultivate safely to ensure that durian meets export standards and maintain the reputation and brand of Quoc Oai durian,” Mr. K'Tieu shared.
